So I picked up my first Kamisori that needed a "little" work. It came out pretty good, has just enough good hard steel at edge to be useful. Hard to tell from pics, but u can see layers in blade like damascus. about 50 in polished area. Also gives off a very strong metallic odor when stropped on Cr-Ox balsa.

Think your smelling High carbon steel is all
Maybe the layered part of is wrought iron?

I like the smell of steel as well.
Wet dog stink I can do without, however, since I happen to have two dogs, I get exposed to it anyway.
As for steel smell? I notice that when I'm sanding a razor sometimes.
