Charlie,
How does adding clay during the quench create the Hamon? I've read a little about adding clay during tempering, but not quenching? I'm not a knifemaker or anything, I'm just curious.
BTW: The razor is very beautiful.
Michael
The clay slows down the quench, the area that is covered with clay cools at slower rate than the uncovered steel. The slower cooling rate makes for a different crystalline structure. The different crystalline structures are accentuated by dipping the blade in a dilute acid (ferric chloride).

Charlie, does the hamon follow it's own pattern or does it follow a shape you draw in the clay or is it a bit of both ?
Nice flow as usual mate :)
Another beautiful razor.
I do like the style of your blades. One of these days I am going to figure out how you get the textured pattern. I have an idea but don't know that I am ready to put it to the test. And, asking would just be to easy.
