Nice job!
I have one of those spike wedges. They are sweet shaving razors.
Fantastic looking set. I am attempting to build a Henckels 7 day set (only because I found a sweet Henckels 7 day box that I decided I needed to fill), but I refuse to spend much on each razor, so it will take a while- but I am in no rush.
Question for you Spike fans: the razor in my avatar is one of those little translucent green handled Spikes and that one was my first restore. I was very happy with the way the entire thing cleaned up. However, I have been having trouble getting it honed properly. I can get it pocket knife sharp without a problem, but I can't get it to pop hairs and it certainly won't shave. I have been using a 1K and then 4K/8K setup. Bevel looks good but I just can't get past pocket knife. It was mentioned in this thread and I've seen it mentioned elsewhere that these hone nicely, so I am a bit frustrated. I have done countless mixtures of circles and laps, resetting the bevel, etc. Full disclosure: I'm a n00b honester so I don't know if I should just keep going and trying again and again or if I need to change something up. I would appreciate any advice or tips.
I will continue to research honing Spikes and may need to post in the honing thread, but I wanted to take advantage of the gathering of Spike fans.
Again, great work mjhammer!
Well, they ARE little wedges! They can be a PITA to get going as any wedge. Also, most examples were well-used and have some hone wear. If you are getting an irregular or very wide bevel, that might present a problem. Tape the spine! Also, they are commonly found with frowning edges. Check that. PM Mike! He is a good guy and is surely an expert by now! :D
Thanks sharptonn. I will contact Mike directly if I keep having troubles. I would say the bevel is quite wide... When I first attempted honing it I did not tape, but I soon realized it was going to take a while and have been taping single layer since. I will have some re-resto work to do once I get it shaving; but live and learn. I have attached a quick pic for reference.
