Scales are top notch grain patern superb enjoy! great work!
Beautiful job. Sadly my recent attempt at making a set of scales using this same wood resulted in the scales literally breaking into pieces during sanding.
I know this wood is prone to breaking, so i really went over my piece before hand to make sure it had no splits or defects. I also left the scales a tad thicker at about 3/16. Rounding them helps because it gives you the idea its thinner then it actually is. The 8 coats of polyurethane also helps to hold everything together afterwards. Its funny, i got the wood at leevalley. All the other wood was about $1 - $3 for 3/4 x 3/4 x 6. This was $8.70. not cheap.
Yep I grabbed a pen stock piece and cut that little b^%&&d by hand to yield three pieces. I was trying to sand it thinner than 1/8 and snap, three pieces. Can't see myself attempting to work with that wood again until I get some power tools to rip that pen stock, it takes way too long to do by hand.
Harrywally,
Amazing job with this shaver. It is beautiful. I would like to some pictures of it on a different surface that accents your work on the burl.

Heres some other pics on a black leather pillow. helps bring out the black lines in the burl. The polyurethane is so much like glass, it reflects any light back at my camera.
