J. Wood, by request

This razor, a J. Wood, York razor came up in my rotation today. It's one of my favorites that I built some time ago. Some saw it on the 'shave of the day' thread and asked about it.
I bought it and didn't realize at first what it was. Turns out it's a Microtome. Meaning , it has an asymmetrical ground blade similar to a Kamisori.
So with this in mind I decided to play up the Japanese theme by building a set of scales for it that resemble the wrapped handle of a Samurai sword.

I also decided to do a single pin so as not to interfere with the bolsters which are covered with 23k gold leaf. I wanted as much of a sword look as I could achieve with a set of razor scales.

The wood is Satinwood which I stained, added black to the background and sealed it. The blade was pretty decent and I gave it a brushed finish after sanding.
I have a quite a few chisels but in this case I had to make a new chisel to complete the carving which you can see in the photos.

Man those scales are awesome!

That's so cool. Definitely one of the most original sets of scales I've seen in a long time

Back when the world was young and I was in Boy Scouts, my dad bought me a block of wood with the dimensions outlined to carve out a neck slide. He had to do it as I was just as lost then as I am now and I'm humbled!:bow

Glad you guys liked them. Yes Cudarunner I remember my older brother doing one of those and my dad helping him with it. I was amazed at the process. I guess something stuck with me. By the time I was of age the Scouting thing passed me by. Ahhh, son #2,,,,

These are deceiving though as there really isn't much to them. They look like they'd be heavy or bulky but you can see they're maybe the thickness of two pennies and taper over their length. I was more concerned about carving through them besides just into them. They're light as a feather.

Besides , a razor from J. Wood, just had to have wood scales.

Man, I know you said you were a professional wood worker, but I didn't realize that included carving - what an original and cool scale job! How long did those scales take? 15 or 20 hours?

Actually, I'm primarily a wood carver for the past 22 yrs. or so,, and I do woodworking as well. The scales didn't really take all that long. I think I spend an evening or so on them.

Excellent work. Very impressive. If I wouldn't have seen the pictures of you carving the wood I would have thought the scales were wrapped in leather.
