Well I am venturing into restoring an old razor I picked up for cheap on E-bay. Scales were said to be wood but appear to be some badly damaged horn. Backside piece broke off after I had it depinned. So now I just need to think of what I want to scale it with.
Rust did not affect the edge at all so I am pleased about that. Will take a bit more work polishing. Now I just need to find a source for my scale material.

If there is a Lee Valley Tools near you, they have some woods, if not masecraft.com has a nice selection of other materials.
It looks like it had a nice smile to it.
Thanks for the heads up on materials I will take a look. And yes it does have a nice smile and it doesn't appear like the rust affected much the edge is clear.
Unfortunately I don't think there are any Lee Valley stores in the US (please correct me if I'm wrong!), but +1 to the suggestion for both Lee Valley and Masecraft.Quote:

BTW, Frederick Reynolds made some great blades - that should be a beaut when it's done.
I got some great wood from Rockler.com - they have some nice exotics in 1/8" pieces which makes it perfect for making scales. I made my first set a week or so ago out of Paduak.
Keep us posted.very interested to see if that blade can be resurected.

I do not know if you have them up there but Woodcraft has a selection and the one by me has a "scrap bin" that has great stuff in it for scales. The scrap is $1 a pound, can't beat it for many of the exotics.
Actually there is one in St. Louis I may take a lunch trip one day this week.
One hint when restoring razors that have the Black Spider rust or Devil's Spit, I would very much recommend that you put the razor on a 1k stone and set the bevel before you go much farther, and confirm that you can get a clean bevel without any swiss chesse holes in there...
Nothing is worse then doing all the work to find that the razor will never shave... :( Go ahead and ask me how I know this :p
LOL yes I thought that might be an issue and as soon as I had the rust off I did set a bevel. unfortunately I do not have the equipment to take a picture of that but it looks good, solid metal. Now to try and get rid of the rest of the pitting...trying to go slow..
So I have decided to try some Buffalo Horn with white streaks as the scales. I noticed when depinning this razor that there were no spacers. Is this typical?
That's not at all unusual. Good idea to add some in though. Good choice on the scale material - that stuff looks fantastic when done well. What are you thinking of using for the wedge?Quote:
