Hey Andrew,

His name is Rob, and I don't think he's on SRP. I bought one of his Latigo leather paddle strops and when I spoke to him he mentioned not knowing much about straight razors. I believe he sells his strops mostly to wood workers/chefs etc for knife edge maintenance. The latigo leather is nice, but I've realised I prefer a hanging strop.

Does he still have any left/have you bought?

cheers for the reply, I haven't actually bought one but have seen his ad there for a while. I'm not sure how long listings last on gumtree but I got the impression he keeps re-listing his ad, and why not when it's free to do so.

I only saw the price and thought it was fair ($30) and wanted to know a bit more about it. I think you've filled me in nicely

Be careful with the “Green Honing Compound” and use only razor quality Chromium Oxide from known vendors.

Re the Chromium Oxide, being in Newcastle Australia, I located, after serious searching, a reliable source, being a company that uses the green powder as a colour and glaze for pottery. Thus this was from a potter. Absolute surety of particle size, and no silly crayon. After telling this potter my dilemna and what I needed it for, gave me the ins and outs of this substance, including it's reputation as a rust inhibitor. I mix a small amount (1/8th) of a teaspoon with mineral oil and coat a balsa wood block with it. Leave it a few days and it is impregnated sufficiently to allow colour on you finger but not drowning in it. It works a treat for me. Cost me 8 bucks for 3 oz, and will last me until I'm 100. I looked at Dr Matt's video re nanocloth, and tried using a velour type window cleaning cloth. Great results when viewed under magnification. Most importantly it gave a good shave. Mate, in my view green crayons are for kids at school....just my view after handling the stuff, and knowing that a 1/4 of a teaspoon would make quite a few crayons. Remember it is a chemical compound, not some panacea in the form of a crayon. Seek out a potter and get the real stuff. Bob
