I think these guys DMT Diamond Sharpeners Buy Online in Australia and Save! will be the best price on the DMT's, but my other hones came from Belgium.
Yup Everten's are about the cheapest here for DMT's
Then you have Carbatec for Kings & super cheap China 12k's
Sharpening Tools : CARBA-TEC
Lie Nielsens in S.A. but a bit exe

Double Sided Japanese Waterstone 1000/6000 grit : CARBA-TEC
and is this the 12k Chinese hone you are talking about Oz?
Economy Double Sided Oil Stone : CARBA-TEC
Personally I think 1k --->6k is a big jump . I prefer to go 1k 2k 4k or another option is 1k,3k,6k but 1k,4k, 8k is maybe a better progression. I just think you will spend a lot of time lapping your 6k with that combo. Remember Carbatec is mainly aimed at knife & tool folks.
This is the Chinese 12k :

1k is necessary if you buy razors on eBay...As is some kind of lapping system for your stones ;)
Not sure if you bought anything already, but I have a set of norton combos that are very lightly used if you looking for the standard starting stones. PM me if interested.
I recently got a set of naniwas and the nortons arent getting any use at all anymore.
I got a King 800 and a C12k from Carbatec in Melbourne. Seemed like pretty good prices.
As far as progression I go 800, 4k, 8k, 12k and now I'm experimenting with CrO on balsa as well. Too early to say if it makes much diff compared to just the 12k. What do you more experienced guys think?
I found pasted strops improved the C12k edge when I used it. See what works for you.
You've got a bit of a jump there from 800 to 4k. Do you spend a lot of time on the 4k ?
Yeah, a fair bit. That is probably the main thing I am trying to learn at the moment, how long to spend on a hone until I move onto the next one. I bought a cheap 60x jewellers loupe and I find that's handy.
I just shaved with a razor that has gone to CrO. Probably my smoothest shave to date. Still, hard to say if it was the CrO, my beard, the sun and the stars being in the right alignment, etc, etc.
I bought a 1k/6k and a 3k/8k combo off Everten and a 12k from Classicshaving that I have since been told would have been cheaper had I known of CARBA-TEC...Live and learn though.
Mick
Gents.
just a couple of days ago I got onto the carbotec website, and they are here in Perth, have been cogitating over whether I may purchase some of their waterstones, they seem pretty cheap, I gather a lot of you blokes are onto them as well. I am currently using an Arkansas stone for the initial grind, with kero, then go to a very fine stone the old man used to sharpen his muelsing and tailing gear with. I also use a barbers hone and a couple of other fine white natural stone picked up from and antque stores. The last two are very like what an old time barber in West Perth uses on his straights. I find a mix of light gun oil and kero is a good thing.

And don't forget to check overseas websites.
As nice as it is to go local - sometimes it works our cheaper (even after postage and currency conversion) to go overseas.
Depends on what you're after of course.
All the best,
Michael
The Yella side is the 3k and the white side is the 8k...Please tell me I haven't honed arse about face... :)
Mick
Have a look at the end of the box for a sticker & tell me what it says. My one read opposite to what was stamped on the stone. I think the white is 3k same as a Norton combo. The white is a much faster cutter than the yellow side & leaves deeper scratches the way i see it.
Well, bugger me! That explains why my touch ups have been a tad off. The sticker don't actually say anything...I asked it to say something. But it does read amd how it reads is White Fine Grit #3000. Yellow Super Fine Grit #8000. The rock itself reads the opposite. If you know for sure which is which, tell me. I've got to lap the yellow side some more before I do another touch up. I discovered a small ridge while touch testing it just now.
Mick
I gave a CD a swipe with both sides of the stone & the white side left coarser scratches.
On steel they both leave such a mirror polish its hard to tell but if you scratch plastic with it its more obvious.
I've honed a whole bunch of razors with it over the last 12 months & always used the white side as 3k. I've retired it now as I found it too soft for the amount of work I do but that was how I used it.
I'll have to remember that. I'll be double checking any hones I buy in future.
Lucky you went by what the box read and not the stone...That and experience probably played a hand no doubt.
It's almost too soft for my small amount of use too, I think. It'll do me for a while though. Thanks for that mate.
Mick
No problemo amigo. The upside on being so soft is that they cut fast & they're easy to lap but they're really better suited to knife sharpening IMHO
Yesterday I did a little more lapping on my Kasumi hone on some finer grit W&D and then gave my Dovo I.MoP another touch up, since it seems I may have been using the 3k side like an 8k.
I can now say with complete certainty that you CAN shave off a 3k, but an 8k finished off with a c12k is far smoother. Thanks for pointing out that little fault of the Kasumi to mark the stone wrong, but the box correctly Oz. It makes a world of difference. I won't go into my honing experiences that should have told me this was the case. Hindsight is 100% and I should have seen it at the time. As testing on the "8000" was always a tad off compared to the "3000" and my patience only went so far before I decided it was as good as I could get it.
Mick
I bet a lot of Kasumi owners are doing the reverse pyramid :p
I know I was! Not any longer now though...Reminds me I might put a review up on that Everten site to say just that.
Mick
Yeah they'll love that :D
Damn. I saw the sticker but the stamps on the stones were opposite so i thought no one is that stupid that they are going to stamp a stone wrong. I might change that to who would be stupid enough to see both and assume soemthing was correct. That would be me.
Guess they thought it was cheaper to put stickers on the box than re-stamp the hone.
BTW Nice honest review there Mick :tu
That CD trick is an awesome idea. I'll have to remember that.
Thanks Oz
Found a use for your Lady Gaga collection Baldy?! :D
Mick
I've got one of the Chinese 12k's that Oz mentioned on the way from Carbatec Sydney. I dont think they are on the web site but they do still have them and they are still only $15.
Not that I really need it but 15 bucks isnt much for a new toy.
I think I paid $25 for my C12k in the Melbourne Carbatec shop. I wonder if it is the same size? Still, for $25 it is about the size of a house brick so I'm not complaining.
The $15 ones are 8"x2". Not house brick size :)
Ok question to those whom have used carbetec, they carry Pfeil 'Natural Belgian Whetstones' am I a little over excited or are they selling coticule bouts?
Pfeil Natural Belgian Whetstones : CARBA-TEC
Those are bouts but there is nothing wrong with that they are just shorter but wider. I think the smaller one they offer may be too small but the other would be ok if you have some experience.
Have a look here too. Maybe cheaper?
