Some of the guys from my plt during the last months of our deployment in Afghanistan. I'm bottom left, 249 gunner/minehound(point man during patrols with shitty metal detector)/driver entire time. Mustve fine at least 30-40 patrols in the lead with that damn minehound and SAW.
Haha, brother 2 ID is who we RIP'd with. And no kidding, this was the best RIP I've ever had. Really smooth. You boys did a great job. Small Army brother, small Army... Hell, we may have even shared a smoke at the RSOI during the transition. Anyways, since you're back there now, and I'm still here, do me a solid and throw back a Blue Boar for me. I haven't been able to get my hands on any Henry's for years since I left the NW. Enjoy a couple weekends for me, just not near Bremerton... nothin' against the squids (my brother is there), I've just seen the women around there... kinda scary... lmao
Where were you based in afghan? My plt was in the ahrgandab moved around to multiple fobs its is seriously likely we did have a smoke together haha
Not where I was, where I am... KAF... our boys now are living in your old room... or rooms (depending on how many times you moved). lol On a good note, the season is getting late, and in a couple months here should really settle down... (as I knock on wood, throw salt over my shoulder and any other supersticious stuf to make it happen). Working closures while still putting wood to a** is enough to really wear you out. lol.

I have big respect for you Navy guys! My Father was a machinist on the USS Bunker Hill in WWII. He recently passed away at the age of 87 and the Navy Chief of Staff arranged to have him buried at sea in a ceremony on the current USS Bunker Hill, a modern guided missile cruiser built in 1985.Quote:

USS Bunker Hill under attack, 19 June 1944.
On 19 June 1944, during the opening phases of the landings in the Marianas, Bunker Hill was damaged when the explosion of a Japanese aerial bomb scattered shrapnel fragments across the decks and the sides of the aircraft carrier. Two sailors were killed, and about 80 more were wounded. Bunker Hill continued to fight, with her antiaircraft fire shooting down a few I.J.N. warplanes.
During this Battle of the Philippine Sea, about 476 Japanese warplanes were destroyed, nearly all of them shot down by Navy F6F Hellcat fighter planes, such as were carried by Bunker Hill
During September, Bunker Hill carried out air raids in the Western Caroline Islands, and then she and her task force steamed a long way to the north to launch air raids on Luzon, Formosa, and Okinawa, through early November.
On 6 November 1944, Bunker Hill steamed eastward from the forward area, and she was taken to the Bremerton Naval Shipyard, for a period of major overhaul/upkeep work and weaponry upgrades, as all warships must undergo periodically. She departed from the Port of Bremerton on 24 January 1945, and then she steamed westward back into the combat area in the Western Pacific.

During the remaining months of World War II, Bunker Hill fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima; the 5th Fleet raids against Honshū and the Nansei Shoto (15 February – 4 March); and the 5th and 3rd Fleet raids in support of the Battle of Okinawa. On 7 April 1945, Bunker Hill's planes took part in an attack by the Fast Carrier Task Force of the Pacific Fleet on Imperial Japanese Navy forces in the East China Sea. The superbattleship Yamato, one light cruiser, and four destroyers were sunk during this Operation Ten-Go, as it was called by the Japanese Navy.
On the morning of 11 May 1945, while supporting the invasion of Okinawa, Bunker Hill was struck and severely damaged by two Japanese kamikaze planes. Suffering two kamikazes strikes in 30 seconds: An A6M Zero fighter plane emerged from low cloud cover, dove toward the flight deck and dropped a 550-pound (250 kilogram) bomb that penetrated the flight deck and exited from the side of the ship at gallery deck level before exploding in the ocean.[3] The Zero next crashed onto the carrier's flight deck, destroying parked warplanes full of aviation fuel and ammunition, causing a large fire. The remains of the Zero went over the deck and dropped into the sea. Then, a short 30 seconds later, a second Zero, piloted by Ensign Kiyoshi Ogawa, plunged into its suicide dive. The Zero went through the antiaircraft fire, dropped a 550-pound bomb, and then crashed into the flight deck near the carrier's "island", as kamikazes were trained to aim for the island superstructure. The bomb penetrated the flight deck and exploded. Gasoline fires flamed up and several explosions took place. Bunker Hill lost a total of 346 sailors and airmen killed, 43 more missing (and never found), and 264 wounded. She was heavily damaged and was sent to the Bremerton Naval Shipyard for repairs. She was still in the shipyard when the war ended in mid-August 1945.

It wasn't. If it had been I might have put in 20. Chain of command drove me nuts. Just couldn't get used to answering to idiots. Common problem for a lot of soldiers, I think.
US Navy 1986-1992.
Active Duty US Army.
Currently 1LT serving as the DOL plans and ops chiff in US Army Garrison Schweinfurt, Germany.
Served 3 years enlisted in the 1/20th Group as a silent professional.
Pay and fun have an inverse relationship in the military.
Awww come on brother... the pay is decent and the fun is definately there to be had... you just have to find it... and not get caught, especially in Germany. Haven't made it to Schweinfurt yet, but being by Graf... well the CZ border is to close for me to ignore. Plenty of fun to be had there. And at reasonable price.
USAF MSgt Retired in 2005 after 25+ years on active duty. Two weeks out of high school at the tender age of 17 I started basic training. Aircrew Life Support (maintained survival equipment, parachutes, survival kits, and taught SERE). Spent most of my time in the Pacific from Alaska (NOT Elmendorf) to Korea, the Philippines, Guam and Hawaii. Two and a half years in Iceland and Stateside assignments in Washington state, Idaho, and Texas. Deployments Kosovo, Operation Enduring Freedom, Northern Watch and Southern Watch and more deployments to Team Spirit in Korea than I can count, let alone remember. I managed to stay in fighter squadrons most of my career (F-111's, F-4's, A-10's, F-16's and F-15's) worked for a rescue squadron in Iceland (HH-60's) then went to tankers (KC-135s) at Fairchild AFB and wound up my career at Dyess AFB, TX assigned to a B-1 unit. All in all it was a great adventure and to be honest I doubt I'm truly suited to do anything else for a living but seem to have successfully faked it for the last 8 years or so. If they ever started scraping the bottom of the barrel and hiring fat old men, I'd no doubt start all over again tomorrow morning (if they'd let me keep the epic stash.) No fool like an old fool, right?
I think the fun for me ended when I came to the conventional side. I DO like the pay and the normality, but this isn't as personally rewarding as counter-narco was.Quote:

94-97 obligatory service Israeli army, infantry Combat medic and then AC battalion's Chief combat medic, finished as a first Sargent.
97-present IDF reservist (as manah said-a month a year) in recon and fire direction , back to team combat medic and marksman where I like it. First master sargent, with 3 years to go unless I volunteer for more. Don't tell SWAMBO volunteering is even an option, she thinks I'm too long in the tooth to be running around with the kids in my team as it is...

I spent some time in P-3's. 3000+ hrs. as a Flight Engineer. Started in P-3A's up through the P-3C update II. VP-23, VP-44 and VPU-1. Flying 200 feet off the water rigging ships was the most fun you could have with your clothes on. Finished my career as the Maintenance Masterchief in VPU-1.Quote:

USN '71-'77. Got out an AO2. Aviation Ordnanceman 2nd Class, "BB stacker/f'n ORDY/red shirt. etc. Stationed at NAS Cecil Field, JAX, FL. June '72 VA-82, and the rest of CAG-8 aboard the CVA-66, USS AMERICA WESTPAC '72-'73. VA-82 was an A-7C outfit. Air to Mud. Petty officer in charge of the fuze crew. Did CAG arming/de-arming. ( last guy to mess with the ordnance before launch, first guy to touch the plane after recovery. Lost a lot of my hearing due to that job, but HEY, the VA gave me hearing aids after 35 years.
VA-82 had the honor of finally putting the Than Hoa bridge out of commission for good. There were over 100 Air Force, Marine, and Navy planes shot down trying to drop that bridge. Our guys rolled in and dumped it with Mk-84's ( 2,000 pounders) and got out without a scratch. Lt Brister and LtCdr "Leighton, "Snuffy" Smith did the honors. Snuffy later made Admiral and was the HMFIC during Bosnia until he fed up with Bill Clinton and retired. Snuffy was good people and one of the only two officers in our that the red shirts would take to the enlisted men's club. He was a party animal just like we were.
Helo'd into Da Nang to salvage out a shot up bird one afternoon. Landed during a rocket attack. Stripped what we could off the bird. Got loaded up to fly back and Charles lit us up again. Helo had some extra ventilation, but no issues. Made it back to the boat with some interesting stories and memories.
Tried to get transferred to VP-49 at NAS Jax. Made several flights with them but couldn't get a transfer.
Got out of the "regular" Navy in '74 and went to VF-201 at NAS Dallas, TX. At that time they were still flying F-8 Crusaders.
Wasn't exactly a "squared away sailor". Stood before the Skipper a couple of times but never got busted.
Enlisted in U. S. Navy in 1965 on a 3 year enlistment. Boot camp at Great Lakes, IL, Co. 603, reported to USS Sandoval APA 194, (Attack Transport). Ship was in Pacific in WWII and was in the movie Away All Boats starring Jeff Chandler. Moved to East Coast and was used to train Marine officers in amphibious landings, made med cruises and swapped out the guard at Gitmo, Cuba. Ship was also in the movie Anzio in the 60's. I was in ONI, Operation, Navigation and Intelligence Division and was a Yoeman. Made two Med cruises, went to Cuba twice and ran up and down the east coast. After making Petty Officer I was assigned to Shore Patrol in Port and stood my watches in the Radar room at Sea. When i left i did not miss the circus but i missed the clowns.
Active duty Army 2006-present. 5 years and two Iraq deployments with the glorious 3rd Infantry Division. Currently in the 4th ID and I just want to go back to 3 ID
I have a buddy who did a tour in Iraq in 2010 with the 3 ID, I think he's still at Stewart... Great unit with a proud heritage.Quote:
