A Rabbit in the Garden
Attachment 141801://[/image]
The War Ministry has been suggesting I shoot some rabbits in the garden, we seem to have a few running about, generally only to be seen when one is unarmed. I have had my Niel Fields .40 Lancaster long rifle charged for awhile, and have had one shot at a rabbit early one morning. This morning early, the War Office and I were having a coffee , when we did spy some rabbits run out from under the spare cottage on our farm and down into the horse paddock in front of said cottage. I duly toddled down with a primed Lancaster and took the stairs up onto the raised veranda on the cottage, then sat and waited. Sure enough three rabbits were to be seen moving about the high cape weed, feeding on clover patches. 30 minutes later one big rabbit popped up on a horse path near the fence about 75 yards away, so I slowly stood up , took careful aim, especially as shooting down hill, and squeezed off. A big gout of smoke, and the roping horses snorting and moving about, Toby my heeling horse walked up to the spot where the rabbit was and seemed to be snuffling about indicating the shot may have been a success, meanwhile I am reloading in the hope the other rabbits might oblige. Waited 45 minutes, no sign so walked down to where Toby had been sniffing about and sure enough a nice sized rabbit shot through the shoulders. The War Office was most pleased, so cleaned him, and now applying a Jamie Oliver recipe, Essex Deep Fried Rabbit, and we will eat him this evening. Now for the next two rabbits.
Why the fuss, I don't get much opportunity to hunt due to time constraints these days, but at least get the odd shot around home, till time frees up again.
Cheers

Around the house I have Barbie. Cat. She'll take anything down from a mouse to chipmunk to a rabbit. The bigger ones she brings home!
