My daughter has shown interest in fountain pens, so I'd like to get her one for her birthday. She has never had one and I know very little about them. I'm looking at this combo right now, Lamy Safari Fountain Pen Gift Set - Red - Medium Nib - JetPens.com, if there is a better set for the money please let me know.
The Lamy Safari is one of the best value fountain pens out there. It won't disappoint her.
For future ink purchases, definitely consider the Noodler inks. A lot of fountain pen enthusiasts rave about it.
When she's ready for the heirloom piece, definitely take a look at Sailor, Parker, Montblanc, or—if you want to splurge—the fabled Nakaya.
I am a man who is rich in daughters. I've given them fountain pens and seen their taste in pens change.
Maybe start with a Pilot Varsity. It's cheap so you won't be out the money if her interest changes and they write well. They are fairly clean, you don't have to mess with ink. If she likes the way they write then upgrade her later.

In terms of cheap, but great writers, check out the Pilot Metropolitan.... very nice looking/writing pen for $20. The nice thing about the Lamy is that you can buy more sizes of nibs which are swapable

Smooth nibs and easy to change, you don’t have to remove the ink cartridge or converter to change nibs and with-out a big mess.
They are not lookers like MB, Parkers, Watermans and others, but not ugly either,a good, comfortable working pens, and I like the big clip.
I also like the Private Reserve inks, they have some cool browns, blues and greens.
Ended up ordering the gift set in blue/black ink and a couple of the disposables pens. Thanks to all, I knew I could count on ya.

While thinking about the syringe method using a syringe and "shoving it down the throat." Where in the heck am I going to get a syringe of the right size? I found some tubing that slid firmly over the body of the pen.I cut off about a 3 inch piece which was plenty long but I needed room for my fingers as you will see. I then took a 5/16 inch diameter bolt and cut the threads off not to hold excess ink and shoved it in the end. a rod would work fine but it is what I had handy and the price was right. I then held the bolt in place with a hose clamp that was probably unnecessary but again I had it handy and better safe than sorry. Standing this contraption on the bolt head I then filled it about halfway with ink and then inserted the pen in the other end. After flipping everything over so the pen is on the bottom I squeezed the tubing like a sac. When the bubbles stopped I then released my pressure. I did this a few times and could see the ink fill the window in the side. Flipping the works over again I took it apart and cleaned everything up.
I have been happy with the results.
