When at a box store nursery, when looking for a tree to bonsai. Is there a good quick way to look st the nebari other than squeezing the sided of the plastic pot to push the tree up and removing the top 1/2" of soil?
Thanks in advance

Not sure which box your shopping at but,,,,Home Depot has a garden buyer in each store. They wear an apron like the rest of them but all you have to do is ask who it is and when they are in. Usually morning shifts. They should be more than happy to help you find what your looking for and even order it from their vendor. If not, get me a name and store number and you will get better customer service than you ever imagined :<0)
What type of trees you looking at getting?
the Jacaranda is beautiful! would love to have one in the office..

A lot of Japanese maple are grafted, try and avoid them. They never look right.

I've gotten a couple of their smaller trees and have been pleased.

Can you recommend a bonsai tool set ? I was looking on amazon but it looks like the are grouping similar item reviews in to the item I am looking at.http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VLNC9PO/..._sQrAyb315Y7Q7 this one has a few recent one star reviews but seems to be favored on other sites.
I only have a Sago Palm left. I kept forgetting to water them.

I haven't gotten any tools. I did get their tray with gravel for bonsai to sit in.
Not sure how to answer size question.
Thanks I think miniature sins bonsai is tiny pot/plant , miniature is restive to the full size tree but am asking for confirmation.
I hound a tmer and unattended watering setup DIY if you need to water eithoun remembering https://youtu.be/WjbeQjXJnSk. ~$50
As to tools, I didn't need any. If you keep them long enough to where they need maintenance, garden pruner/sheers works fine. Most of that stuff is for traditional style full repotting where you trim root ball back and hard core training/pruning. If you do this for a few years you might get a couple specialized tools.
I did get their potting soil to match what was in the pot originally. Every two to three years I repot the palm. A bunch of them will require daily looking after whether indoor or outdoor. Too much sun, toast, not enough sun, toast, not enough water, toast, too much water toast... Go away for weekend... toast. So be prepared to babysit them.
Damn , now I need a trolley to take with me everywhere
I would hate myself if I ever killed a $3K+ bonsai. Imagine: you're on holiday, lying belly up on the beach, sipping a nice and cool cocktail and you keep worrying whether your neighbour is doing the the right things with your precious bonsai. Holiday spoiled.
Once you decide a tree will be a bonsai, it should go into a bonsai pot to begain training the roots and trunk.
Here's pic of my two year (I've had it 2yrs) old Sago palm. By watering from the top (why I got the tray) and not soaking pot in sink I found out the palms can have a dry spot underneath where the roots die and branches croak. It's holding up now. I have new growth shoot starting I will snip soon. Below the palm is a rosemary I killed by under watering and boom it was gone. We got one nice little trimming off it for cooking before I parched it. Still looked kinda cool so we kept it. har.
