Rear valance fits! Time to move to the motor mount challenge. Ugly welds be damned..

I’ve still got to beat this panel flatter. DPO bent the valance to make room for the bigger fuel line fitting.
I’m going to do something neater, when the time comes.

Ok, I’m seeing the dilemma of the DPO and thinking I have to lose my oil cooler to make this all fit where it ideally should.

Can gain 5” which is the dia of the bell housing.

But I need to go an inch lower to clear the steering rack, unless I lift that angle slightly.


Anyone tear apart a purolater oil filter, cooler before? Hoping it’s an add on I can just remove, maybe new bolts needed.
Will gain me the inch I need and can’t imagine the 1.8 wil suffer to much for the lack of oil cooler.

Just weld it on there somewhere. It'll work!

Pretty straight forward cooler design, once removed, plenty of room for the oil filter now, and I now have a target to build the new mount locations to.
Wish I had news ones in hand but alas, will build to what I have an order for the spring .

Nice clearance around the steering column now too.
Sure it’ll have to be undone for any subsequent engine removal, but that’s just 4 bolts, and not likely be needed again for some time.

Fabbed up my new mount set up today.
Started with the lay up.

Then the cutting and welding.


And test fitting.


Used some wood sized for the new mounts, and she looks like she’ll work.
Now to move the tranny support,then I can seal up the frame before it’s to cold to paint anymore.

Test fit a few more times for good measure, then welded in my new mounting brackets for the engine and tranny. Wife snapped an action shot, in case I burst into flames probably for insurance, hehe.

Can see the residue of the old forward mounts on top of the frame still. Will grind them a bit smoother before I paint.

Will hold off on drilling and tapping the transmission mounts till the final install.
All cleaned, degreased, and metal etched in prep for the epoxy, but no more time this weekend.

Pretty happy to have all the brain teasing stuff behind me now. Everything else, and there is a lot still, is more text book restoration work.. will have to do some custom firewall work now as well, but damn happy to have successfully moved the power plant forward 5” and lower by about 4”

70 years of crud didn’t want to come off easily and after laying on my back all week cleaning and welding it dawned on me to get clever.

Gone back two steps to degrease again, as the bottom really needs to be spotless for the por15 to adhere with maximum effectiveness. So much easier to get into the corners with a steel wire brush with it jacked up. Wish this occured to me last weekend.
I’ll leave it tipped up till tomorrow to ensure she’s fully drained as well.

DAMN! That's a hell of a 'Wheelie' without an engine and drive train---can't wait to see what she does once she's all back together
