Just my 2 cents worth here, I second the scubaboard idea great resource. I would also recomend trying out different gear and types of BC's before deciding on what you want. But if you do decide to go with Zeagle I have a Ranger that I was about to but up for sale. I found I prefered a BP/W especially since I live in New England where its 7mil wetsuits and drysuits.

Hi, I'm a PADI Dive Master and TDI Tech Diver (Advanced Nitrox/Deco). I have a Zeagle Stiletto and a Dive Rite Backplate and Wing. I have bought some equipment off of the more popular websites, but recommend a dive shop for BCDs and wet suits until you get a little experience. Getting the right fit is important. Also look at what type of diving you want to do. If your mainly traveling to the Carribean or other warm water places by plane, you may want to look at small, light weight BCDS.
EDIT: I guess I should have looked at your location. Hawaii huh. Your already at the dive location. lol

Thanks - I've been asking some questions on scubaboard.com and getting quite a bit of help. Didn't think there were that many divers on the forum here. I'll have to upload some pictures of the water here when I get the stuff from my underwater camera developed :D

And what your qualifications are?
I am NAUI certified 30 years ago. Have done light inland commercial work for about 15 years. Mostly pipeline, potable (drinking) water, cleaning of intakes and discharge, and inspections. Got my commercial training the old way, by working with other commercial divers. I met, worked with and worked for a lot of nice people. But like everything it is a young mans game you have to know when to get out. Still like to sport dive.
Sport diver, I have my Padi advanced cert and am working on continuing with more advanced training.
I'm a new Padi diver (20 something dives). I have my AOW, EANx, Deep Dive certifications and am going for my EFR/Rescue cert next...on my way to Dive Master, if possible =)
I used to be heavily into diving, my quals are PADI Rescue Diver, PADI Medic First-Aid, PADI O2 Administrator, TDI Advanced Nitrox, TDI Decompression Procedures.
Though I don't really dive any more, except on the occasional holiday overseas. Last time I was in the water was in 2006 when I went to the Great Barrier Reef for a week on a liveaboard. I haven't thought about it for ages, but goddamn that was an awesome trip. :)
I did CMAS certifications some 20-25 years ago. CMAS*, **, ***, rescue diver + divemaster. Also worked extra for few years at the local shipyards with inspections, documentations and simple ndt dive tasks.
It was fun while it lasted, but i ceased diving about 5 years ago when it began to take too much time away from my family. Also my friend got into serious diving accident and i didn't want my wife and kids ever to face a situation like that.
Still miss it sometimes, but i think it's hobby meant for the younger men and women.
I've been Open Water cert. for years. I was doing Nitrox, and just got out of it. I went through my gear last night, Dive Computer, BC, Wet Suits, Tanks, Regs, I have thousands of dollars worth of gear just sitting around. I'm debating on selling it. I'm not sure that I'll use it anymore. I have Atomic Aquatics Titanium Regs, and a Zeagle Ranger LTD BC....amongst other stuff.....used to be good stuff....
PADI certified... I like/don't love it... Mostly, I will go when I'm already at a great place to dive... It's fun occasionally though
PADI advanced open water with deep, wreck and night specialties. just got back from doing a fair bit of diving in Cozumel, lots of fun.
Last time I was in Cozumel, I didn't have time to dive. I heard it's some of the best.
Padi cert. since '82 just went diving again after about 5 years this summer during mini lobster season. Not a great catch but it was still better than going to work.

I have been certified since 1978. (NAUI Advanced) I do not dive nearly as much as I would like, I have 110 logged dives. Trying to get back active and was supposed to do a cold water refresher course a month ago but was severely burned on the arm cooking lobsters a week before. Rescheduled to two weeks ago but winds were 25kt and seas 8-11 ft offshore so that was out. Will see about next week but water up here in Mass is getting cold and my dry suit no longer fits so may have to wait till Spring, darn it.
The first time I was certified was in 1978. I met the guy who ended up being my best man in that class. I can't remember for sure, but I think it was Padi.
Then life intervened: started a career, married, children.... I finally got back to it about 3 years ago. Did my open water. My wife got certified. We have dived some here in Wisconsin (upgraded to a 7 mil wetsuit), and had trips to Roatan and Utila since then. I was sick the day my wife swam with whale sharks so she has to take me back.
The Roatan and Utila trips were amazing and not all that much $$.
I will go back. Getting some more advanced certs will happen. Now I am just enjoying the dives.
The best stuff is on the bottom, you know.

Certified in 88 and worked for a dive shop teaching for 15 years. Just got out of it about 5 years ago. Still do it for recreation. Last time I counted I had somewhere around 20-25 different certifications. Way too many!

WHY YES I HAVE! It was way fun, dive by day and party by night! And Nitrox is definitely a good idea, you get a good bit more time under the water and the best part is that you don't feel exhausted at the end of the dive. I would recommend it to anyone.Quote:

Do it. That's exactly what my dad did. He quit diving once he got married, then a couple years ago he got me certified and we go on a dive trip at least once a year. It's a fantastic thing.Quote:

Been certified for years. I go to Aruba every year for two weeks, but the industry there has become so terrible that unless we spend up and get private boat and Dive Master, we don't even go anymore. I've been left alone (with my wife) to swim back a long distance to the boat against the current on a drift dive when I couldn't equalize, she was pushed out of the way because an UW photographer wanted to take a photo of the opctopus she was looking at. We watched divers standing on coral while a divemaster did nothing.
We decided that it flat wasn't worth it to us any more. We have had terrible experiences every time we've gone the commercial route in the past 5 years. We'll probably go private again this year (we go in December), and wil probably have a great time.
PADI certified in 1994. I was working on divemaster in '97 when life got in the way of my hobbies. I got a wife and house. I haven't been in the water in ten years. I have a mess of gear that was top of the line in the 90's. Every spring I think about getting it out and having it inspected and having the tanks certified but never do. I should sell it to fund other hobbies but keep it in hopes of one day diving again.

Nope. I've been diving while it was raining multiple times. Turns out it doesn't rain underwater so it's just as great, just not as bright, it's still a lot of fun though ;)Quote:

I was YMCA Open Water II certified in 1987. At the time, the requirements were more stringent and more respected than others...I'm not sure about today. My wife went the same route. We were both taught by Navy Seal dive instructors. Have been to 122' and been on several wreck dives. After we were married, we went to Bermuda and went diving there...Diving is not the reason to go to Bermuda. Most of our diving has been in the John Pennecamp Underwater State Park in the Florida Keys and surrounding Gulf Stream waters and reefs. Hoping to get my 12 year old son certified next year or one after that.
I've been SSI for about 4 or 5 years. Most of my diving is all zero viz and cold. Got into it as a recovery diver for my fire department. I'm now one of the dive captains. We go down when you don't come up.
Anybody else here dive. I admit I'm a total green horn, I've got a total of 7 dives but I'm pretty much obsessed with it. I can't wait to get back in the water.
I got certified two years ago for my birthday, this year I bought myself my own gear, but it was back order till late fall and I didn't want to use rental gear as I had my own coming. Also being new and in a country were my language skills are fluent only in finding a bathroom and getting some food, I wanted to dive with people I know and we had a hard time scheduling it.
I finally sucked it up and went out with a local dive shop and dove with some strangers and had a blast. Some issues with my imperial gauges for those on the metric system and exactly how much air I had but I knew what was going on, my buddy didn't though :confused: and I think he was a little upset, I'll have to be more clear next time on the conversion or just buy a metric air gauge.
I tell everyone that has the slightest inkling to give it a try, the silent world is an amazing one.
I've done it a couple of times on the Great Barrier Reef and also in the Maldives this year with SWMBO. I agree, it really is awesome!
Every time I go I think to myself that I should do it more often. :)

My first open ocean dive was a ship wreck over 30 meters deep... I was hooked.
Fresh water dives aren't nearly as fun to me

I used to scuba dive as a hobby when younger. Worked extra as a diver at the local shipyard for few years also, but now i haven't been underwater for about 6 or 7 years or so. Still do some surface things at work every now and then.
I've never been diving on a warm waters although it would have been most interesting. Visibility here in Baltic Sea is not worth mentioning.

You got to love those AGAs Sailor. I’m an Ol retired diver. Not too much for recreation though mostly search and rescue. It is quite an adventure when you get a chance to actually see what you are doing. I highly recommend it as a job or a sport and confidence builder.

Thanks. AGAs were reliable buddies although they were easy to freeze at winter. Nowadays they're known as Drägers. I still do smoke diving (ship fire fighting) with these at work and surface swimmer tasks as well.Quote:

You hit the nail and i couldn't describe scuba better. Confidence builder and also valuable lesson in life to work and act the way that you always know how to get back. Unfortunately not everyone learned it or got there a little hard way.
Probably the main reason to quit scuba was seeing some of my buddies getting into accidents and i didn't want to leave my family in trouble. Fun it was while it lasted.
