new pipe... considering a Falcon pipe

I decided to quit smoking cigarettes and smoke my pipe exclusively. The problem is the following: I think I have PAD! :) I have 2 pipes: a Chacom and a small Peterson. I have a third one (my first...) but it's worthless. Bought it when I was 16.
Now I realize that I need more pipes. Yes... I NEED, I crave for more pipes! Thus enter... Ebay! :D
I'm a very young chap and I'm afraid I'll suffer from the stigmatization of pipe smoking. I know, it's my thing and it's nobody else's business. However, I don't want to be all over everybody's faces with my pipe, looking as if I stole it from my Dad... Therefore I want something discreet and modern looking. I've browsed Ebay and found some pipes that I think are affordable (for me) and that might be good choices. I'm considering a Peterson outdoor series because it is small (quite...) and thus, discreet. It is also quite cheap and, despite the fact that some here don't fancy Peterson's pipes, I guess we can agree that these are good quality pipes. Right?
I'm also considering a Falcon pipe... they look modern and I like that a lot. I also like the goo-less system. However, I'm not sure if it works well. Anyone willing to share information on these? Are these lightwheight? I'm not a big fan of heavy pipes...

I don't know much about Falcons, but I'm a huge fan of Karl Erik's pipes. I have three (though I tried to sell one on the classifieds but no one bit), and they are all amazing. Unfortunately, they are no longer being produced since Karl passed away, but there are quite a few out there. I would highly recommend one if you can find one that suits your tastes.

I've also got a Chacom. She was my first "nice" pipe and she's served me well. She's a bit less expensive than my others, so she's my travel pipe, and I use her to smoke my "sweetest" blend (Gentleman's blend from deweyavesmokeshop.com).

Hey man, I like pipes too. Consider it an idiosyncratic trademark to be seen smoking a pipe, not a stigma.

Joke, you don't smoke Latakia straight, do you? That would be pretty intense. In blends, I do favor English styles with high Latakia content.

Oh yea, I'm young too (23) but I'm not afraid to rock the pipe out in public. When it's nice, I like to have a smoke at the bar (there is outside seating) and sometimes I on campus too (now and then I get to campus early so I can sit out and enjoy a pipe before class).

Falcon pipes are excellent for the money. Quite lightweight and the trap under the bowl works well. You can actually unscrew the bowl while it is burning and wipe out any excess gunk with a tissue!

I have a couple and prefer the straight style.

They don't have the looks of a top quality briar but are great value. Once you have the metal stem, you can buy new bowls for a rotation.

As for being modern looking, my late uncle smoked one all the time when I was a lad and I'm 57 now...

Maybe the social climate is different in Portugal, but here, I always found that I got a lot fewer funny looks from people, when I smoked a medium sized, traditionally shaped briar pipe.

Anything oversized looks like a theater prop, anything undersized get's suspicion that you may be smoking something other than tobacco, and anything fancy or modern tends to get both kinds of funny looks.


I used to smoke every day at work with a Peterson standard system #316. It's big enough to look like a tobacco pipe rather than a pot pipe, small enough to not look like a stage prop, and so traditional/understated that most people didn't even pay attention to the fact I was smoking a pipe at all.

Plus, the under-bowl chambers on peterson standard system pipes work quite well also.

Some guys don't like them because the extra chamber under the bowl is completely unnecessary if you pack your pipe correctly, and take your time smoking like you're supposed to. However, sometimes you have to do things in a hurry, and I always found the person system to give a smooth, dry, and clean smoke no matter how much I rushed it.

I only smoke infrequently, I've smoked for the best part of 7 years and I've always found it easy to do in moderation. I think I would rather smoke a pipe than the medicore cigars available here (which I do enjoy in the mornings fairly regularly). I've always been a roll my own man with cigarettes and a pipe seems like a similar idea.

Maybe when I'm out of my parents house I will indulge. It's always appealed, the stigma I think you would probably get over. I generally only smoke on my own to relax anyway.

If you're looking @ a system pipe (one that traps moisture), another option to consider is a Kirsten pipe. Many different sizes/shapes and the bowls are interchangeable. No dry rings to worry about, either; all moisture is collected in the shank & removed with the valve @ the end. Very happy with mine, in case you couldn't tell! :D

I think you will find a falcon quite a good pipe, I use my late fathers' falcon, and as another chap said, it is quite convenient to unscrew the bowl and clean on the run. By the way acetone works a treat, dip you pip cleaner in it and it really shifts the tar. I find it does not seem to affect the mouthpiece, I then put a couple of dry pipe cleaners through to finish up. I also smoke a Petersen, with a crook stem, with borkum riff cherry cavendish. This often get comment, as the aroma is very pleasant and I don't generally get hunted out of the house !!

I went for it and, indeed, I stopped smoking cigarettes. I'm a piper at the gates of dawn! :rolleyes:
I still haven't bought a new pipe but I'm surfing ebay and trying to find something that catches my budget's fancy... because if it were for my fancies I'd be skinned! :banghead: :D
I've heard that the Falcon heats up a lot more than a normal wooden pipe... anyone care to comment?

Acetone is not a good thing to inhale. The odds of your getting all the acetone out before you use it again are pretty close to 0.

Vodka and everclear also work well and are less likely to cause problems.

I also smoke a Petersen, with a crook stem, with borkum riff cherry cavendish. This often get comment, as the aroma is very pleasant and I don't generally get hunted out of the house !!

Mmmmmmm the borkum riff cherry cavendish, my number one all time favorite smoke. Pipe cleaning, try dipping the pipe cleaner in some dark rum (I use bundy OP)I also give the inside of the bowl a light wipe with a cotton bud dipped in the rum. Cleans and sweeten,s.

As for the Falcon go for it.
A crook stem Falcon was my first pipe at eighteen, the alloy stem is alot less likely to break to, if you drop it or put it in your pocket and sit on it. Good value for money. 33 years later I still light her up at least once a week! :gl: from Steve.

Thanks mate for the comment re acetone, I will try the vodka. In answere to pipes heating up, I find most do, the Falcon perhaps a little quicker because of the aluminium pipe body.
