Pipe smoking HELP needed

I have been on a cigar bender for over a year, but decided to get back into my pipe after joining the club here, and getting a few ounces of tobacco this weekend really got me excited again and decided to bust out the briar.

Sounds fine, right?

I put my pipe away before I moved to my current house, and can't find the damn thing now! :boohoo:

I really wanted to take it on my annual camping and floating trip, since pipe tobacco travels so much better than a cigar...

I think I will just buy another one, and hope my first one shows up again.

I am going on a camping/floating trip in a few weeks so I am in a real bind for time too.

Any ideas?

Buy a couple corncob pipes. They are basically disposable and no great loss if they get damaged or lost while road tripping. Another benefit to the corncob is that they allow the smoker to try different tobaccos to find the one they like. Nothing is worse than having a nice pipe and some goofy flavor gets stuck in it.

Once the corncob pipe goes 'sour' just ditch it and get a fresh one. Dont even bother really cleaning it ... just remove the burnt ash and remember to let them rest a day or so before smoking them again.

Well as far as tobacco, I personally doubt you could do much better than the Seattle Pipe Club blends! (Yes, I am a member.:)) You can get them from

Or just a good English style blend. I'd stay away from aromatics personally--they burn hot & wet, they can bite (badly), and you don't' really taste the tobacco at all. Natural blends are much more flavorful & complex once your palette adjusts & learns to pick up the subtlety.


As far as a pipe, maybe a Nording in the $80 range--their freehands are more expensive but supposedly great smokes. You can probably find one @ any good tobacconist. Or a Savinelli. Or a Peterson if you don't mind spending more.

Look up "Frank Method" for packing a pipe--ignore his recommendation to light it w/ a torch lighter, though--unless you want to destroy your pipe.:medvl: Not all tobaccos will work w/ this packing method, but many will.

When I was last down in PDX, Rich's Cigar Store had a nice Nording Billiard, half-rusticated on sale for only $45! I still kick myself for not picking it up.:boohoo:

Cigar, he worked with Rocky Patel to make em. Very nice cigar overall.

Gentlemen,

If I were in a rush to find a pipe and tobacco for a jaunt outdoors, I would choose an inexpensive brier pipe, or corncob if desperate, and a hearty Latakia English-type blend. Smoked with a strong cup of coffee or a hearty whiskey, that pipe will turn an ordinary outing into something extraordinary. I speak from personal experience for one of life's great pleasures. Have fun.

2nd on the cob pipes for both lack of significant investment if you lose them (it) and the fact that it is a darn fine smoke. I've burned out several. My favorite tobacco in a cob pipe is Mac Baren's Mixture Scottish Blend. Of course tastes vary, but for me this combination is a marriage made in nicotine heaven.

Funny you should say that... I just bought me some Latakia, a little Virginia/Perique, and plan on drinking plenty of whiskey on the camping/floating/fishing trip!

I went with some Missouri Meerschaum pipes as temporary fixes... and I will probably spring for a Nording in the future, assuming I don't fall in love with those corny cobs.

I dunno, I still have a LOT of pipe research to do yet.
