A lot of guys died in Nam, with the original AR15.
Didn't like the rigors of the battlefield, lots of jams.

Never was a big fan of them, but they're a good weapon, now.

Always thought of the original design AR15/M16 as a self dirtying design allowing burnt gases to enter the receiver and carbon up the bolt head. Never did like that idea.

They had worked out most f the problems by the time I got over there, if you keep it ship shape it didn’t let you down. Before too long I decided on the 12 gauge first, m-16 backup. Most engagements were in your face close.

Well, That one above was not produced. A 1 rifle prototype made for air Force trials before Colt took over. This was years after the AR10 was rejected for the M16 after Armalite's 'composite' barrel failed during army trials. Of course they quickly went to a steel barrel, but the brass wanted Springfield rifles of wood and steel anyway although all were enamored with it at the trials.
They sold AR10's all over the world. This type was a downsized AR10 from a contract to the Cuban government. The original is in a museum.
Brownells makes these. All modern tech. Runs a treat. They also make a AR10 and all the flavors of early M16's and M4. Great reviews.

I wanted something different (of course ) Found it from the maker with a cosmetic 'blem' for a smoking deal.

    Here..

They send them all out with the comic book. Did you get one, Tc?

Interesting story of Armalite. I recently acquired a reproduction of the original prototype AR15. He was a smart designer.

I have an ar-7, armalites Pilot survival rifle, everything goes into the stock and floats it need be, this little. 22 is more accurate than any thing of this sort should be,as a kid I used to take frogs at 25yds, I'm pretty sure Henry arms makes them now. Really fun gun, highly recommended if you need one.

I was in the Navy in 1970 and at that time onboard ship believe it or not we had no M-16s only M-14s. Personally I preferred the M-14. I thought it was an all around better weapon.

I can see that the M14 would be more desirable for Naval duty. Hauls a great round. Accurate. Hard-hitting.
But if I am not wrong, the Navy kept small arms in duty a long time. Seldom used.
Wagging that thing around through the jungle and heat would be a different story, I think.

I guess that was then. I was reading the other day about the gun-trucks of the Vietnam convoys.
The Army guys would go trade the Navy guys something they wanted and mount mini-guns for boats onto trucks and armor them to defend convoys. I guess more handy on land at the time.
Totally off-record. That was back when they could do what they needed to.
