I picked this up today for £3/$5. It's stamped reject, I think because of a few visual imperfections. It's not cracked or damaged otherwise.
Any thoughts? It seems like it might be quite new to me? Materials? Can you easily replace stems?

I have no idea how you clean them out so hopefully some of the more experienced guys will chime in and let you know. I think you do have to clean them before use to get the best out of them and get rid of the lingering smell of the last tobacco smoked.
What tobacco did you go for? I definately recommend Petersons as their stuff is really good.

I haven't sorted out tobacco, I was actually shopping for a new mototcycle helmet but the woman who deals with all that had 10 mins left on her lunch, to I went into the store a few doors up (who unfortunately won't deal in razors, so I never go there) and found this.
Cleaning is pretty simple, but it does take some time and patience. If there is nothing wrong with the stem other than some possible discoloration (oxidation) and some bite marks, there is no real need to replace them stem. It can be replaced, but sometimes replacement means that the stem does not fit the same and will not be as tight. If you want to keep the stem, it can be refurbished and sanitized, and will be good as new. The bowl is pretty able to be sanitized as well, and should be sweetened to remove any residue left behind by the previous owner. You want your new pipe to taste like the tobacco that you are smoking not the ones that previous owners have used.
on the stem just run a bunch of pipe cleaners through with ever clear alcohol or rubbing alcohol till they come out clean. clean the outside of the stem with bar keepers friend. the bowl inside sand lighty and do not got to far. if it looks good then just do the salt alcohol treatment. go on youtube and type in pipe cleaning. i have cleaned a bunch of estate pipes. then for 50 cents get a rubber bit for the end of the stem. in the pic it looks pretty nice.
At the point you are at right now, I would definatley recommend bristle pipe cleaners. You get much better scrubbing in the stem and shank of the stummel.
They look like regulart pipe cleaners but have bristly plastic (usually red) twisted in with them.
Watch it with any alchohol being used in the shank of the stummel - it will remove the finish.
looks like a good smoker to me...shine it up with some bees wax...make sure the inside doesn't have any residue and smoke away:beer2:

I decided to just go for it after my little bit of cleaning yesterday. Picked up a sample of tobacco at a local store (9g for about $2 which I thought was ok), obviously I'm a novice but it went fine. Quite impressed. Think I'll probably stick with the pipe for the odd occasion I do indulge in a smoke.
It is a nice little thing, I'm quite pleased with it for the money. I've often considered picking up a second hand pipe but until this one they all seemed to be a bit too heavily used, this one I don't think has had much use at all - or like I say, has been well looked after.
