To talk music, basses and gear...... anybody?...... is this thing on??
Yeah man, got the basses covered. What do you use?
I'm primarily an upright bass player, jazz, classical, anything that pays really. It's all bass.
I play a Fender Jazz, a Ken Smith 5-string, and a Guild acoustic/electric out of a Hartke VX 3500. For the last ten years I was in a Columbus band called Bum Wealthy. Taking a break for a bit while life settles down, but still groovin...
Right on!!!!..... I would love to own an upright!!... right now im playin my Jazz bass most but I have a 1983 U.S.A. Fender Pbass I bought it new my Jbass is a 1999 mexican that I hotrodded with Lindy Fraylin pick ups hand wound to 1962 spects badass bridge Schaller tuners 500k pots pbass knobs ok ok the only mexican parts are the body and neck.... My baby is my 1981 G&L l2000e totally mint 2nd owner. When i got this thing it still had the original strings and tags on it..... Ive owned many eletric basses and the only one Ive found that can rival that G&L is a Sadowsky. I play through an old Hartke 3500 amp a Hartke 4x10 and an Ampeg 2x15. I dont play much anymore cause of my job but I still find time to play along with a Jaco tune every now and then.....Ryan
How do ya like that VX????........ I was trin to get away from Hartke cause they sound great but they are kinda whimpy on the road had to get a road case and now it weighs a ton.... Ive been trin to get ahold of a Walter Woods amp for a while. They are bout the size of a VCR tape and push 1000 watts
It sounds alright. It definitely falls on the wimpy side if I ever have to play a larger club without monitor assistance, but its okay since I don't generally play gigs where anyone "needs" earplugs. :) My main concern was dropping an amp off the top of the cabinet, so I went with a combo / 1-piece unit.
The Walter Woods sounds like an interesting idea. I know the VX weighs a ton too!
Does your G&L have the sunburst body?
Hello,
I am a bass guitarist
84 Rickenbacker 4003

I play them through a 68 Ampeg V4B through Hartke Transporter cabinets

I am a professional bassist besides being a razor maker. It's what I went to college for and all. Lived and played in Boston and NYC besides touring and now I don't play out much besides cover band stuff. I'd like to get back into music more and definitely will at some point, just probably not where I'm living now. I am not one to ever have multiple instruments/gear, etc. I just want one piece of equipment that can do everything I need. I now play a Benevente SCB 5 (from 2000/2001 or something back when they still hand signed and numbered their basses) through an Acoustic Image Focus SA (no longer made- but the sickest amp head ever, look it up) and Aguilar 112 cab.
I try:beer2:
An older Peavey Cirrus (before they started making *cheaper* Cirruses) that needs sent off. Had a guy look at, fixed one problem...didn't catch the other.
A Stingray that I bought in a pinch because of the Cirrus...and I'm loving it with Chrome flatwounds. I tried them on the Cirrus and they just never "fit" me.
A Nemesis (Edens' generic) 2x10 combo for monitor...all I've ever had so can't compare it really.
If money ever frees up I really want to try some different pre-amp and get some very mild comression/sustain that would could work.
I just play at church...but it's likely different than what comes to mind for "church music" to most people.
We don't necassarily do these, but it's the idea/style.

And since I'm actually a fan of slower stuff...both as the musician and worshipper we've worked on this on but have yet to play it in a service. My own stuff tend to lean this route...albeit...not as good!
It builds for the whole song, but labor through (or fastforawd) to the 6:00 mark.

It's those songs that make me want to play around with signal manipulators like comp/sus.
Absolutely love that last song from every perspective. But, music is music and preferences for it vary more than soaps, stones and strops!:)
At the moment I'm playing on a Chinese Johan Cristoph carved upright bass, it's about 7 years old now and aging gracefully. I've swapped out the tailgut for nylon and chamfered the faces of the soundpost. Currently she's strung out on Damian Dlugolecki gut G and D, and Velvet Garbo E and A. I do a fair amount of bow work on a Tom Owens French grip.
Sitting getting no use is a 1968 Fender Precision Bass, and an Acoustic Image Clarus head which I am considering selling. I haven't had to amplify for quite some time now.
I'm currently using coconut oil on my fingertips to condition the gut strings and fingerboard, and protect my right hand when I really need every bit of volume from the instrument. It's also nice on the left hand for quicker intonation. Any fretless players should try some, it's a trick I picked up from my Sarod playing friends.
Any photos of your basses?
I played bass in the first band I was in. I've since switched to guitar b/c I began writing songs and singing.. Still love to pick up a bass and play ocationally for my church or wherever. IMHO you can really beat good Fender J bass through an Ampeg SVT 810. Although I do love a nice old Rickenbacker 4003.. especially the old ones with checkerboard binding and crushed ablone inlays.. Beautiful basses. A buddy of mine has an old one in fire-glo. The nitro laquer has yellowed over the decades and the whole guitar is now a really great orange. I love that bass.
I've been playing bass for 33 years. I became a luthier at age 20 and had a small business building basses while in college. Now I just do repairs on the side.
I have several basses I built which I play, but do no take out for gigs.
For gigs I have:
- 72 Fender Precision in natural ash
- Mid 80's 61 Jazz Bass RI in white- Yeah I know they bill it as a 62, but it has stacked knobs, which went away in 62 - so 61/early62
- 90's 61 Jazz Bass RI in Sea Foam Green
- 05 61 Jazz Bass RI in Fiesta Red
Fender Bassman 210/250 amp and Fender B-Dec for practice
Plus some odds and ends.
I play, jazz, blues, rock, contemporary Christian, gospel, and anything else I can get a chart for.
Still play in Church every Sunday reading charts and I play in a blues/classic rock band called The Bourbon Rats.
BTW - I have had many many more basses - those are just my current ones.
Hello....I don't play much anymore, but I played covers in many clubs for years in the NW Ohio/Michigan area. Turned down a few road gigs, didn't want to be away from home. I had many basses but I been playing a 1985 Carvin that I bought new. At that time, Carvin had a bass body but I special ordered mine with the guitar body, which they have been using for years now. It comes with Schaller keys, brass nut, brass bridge, 2 double-wound humbucker pickups w/selector switch and out of phase (discreet?) switch, which I never found much use for. Came with glued-on neck, wired in stereo. No pre-amps or neck-thru-body in those days. Rock maple body w/clear finish. Like the other guiy said, I'd rather have just 1 bass that can do it all.
I would like to try a Warwick bass...heard a couple played in Florida and they seem to have a HUGE sound....gonna check them out soon.

They used to be good. Now I think it depends on the individual instrument. I had a mid-90's thumb bolt on that was killer, but newer ones I played were terrible. They changed around some wood choices and upped production so now a good one isn't so easy to find.
I used a red 5 string Warwick back in high school and through most of college. I sold it because I stopped needing it, all my gigs and studies were on upright. I miss it, from time to time. Having played quite a few Warwick basses, that one stands out as a real nice one.
I play in church also. My bass is a GSR200 ( insert laughter here:)). I would love to get a fender j but funds don't allow, I keep buying shaving stuff. My amp is a G&K 3000? I don't remember what exactly the nomenclature is. It does what I need.
I played bass for a bit with some lads in college, Nothing came of it.
At the peak of my gear I had a Spector 5 string through neck NS series. And a spector NS budget 4 string. With a Trace elliot GP12 AH400 amp. Through 2 beasts of cabinets that were never designed for a bass guitar. Those were Matamp 1x15 1x12 1x4 solid horn. I still have the cabs in storage but I think they will need to crossovers re-soldering.
When I sold it all I kept some gear. A broken trace elliot GP11 AH400 (I channel has blown needs a few fets soldering in) A Marshal rack mount 200W head, Again blow channel that needs fixing. A Danelectro 58 longhorn 4 string in creme and purple metalic fleck and some old zoom pedals.... I might still have a bass balls, and a few other boxes as well.

Wow, this is a cool old thread. Here are mine. I'm the original owner of the '78 T-40. I love it, but it's close to 16 lbs of swamp ash and hardware, and I'm gettin' old. So for really long sessions I got the virtually weightless Cort Curbow. (never could learn to like the Steinbergers)
