Birnando,
Good show for your choice. That Pelikan 1000 is a masterpiece. The reason I went with the M800 is because of my small hands. Still, I have had the M1000 in my heart for quite a while, and I may still go with it, too. Oh, heaven . . .

Obie, I have just received the same pen, but in Blue. It is a beautiful writer and I am really enjoying it. I got a great deal on it from, of all places, ebay from a seller in Vancouver!
I think I might actually prefer my older Pelikan 400NN F nib. These older ones write so beautifully!
All of Pilot's Namiki pens are top notch IMO, The 823 is a great alternative to pricier Pelikans.
Absolutely! But only the ones I make!
My latest pen purchase: A Kaweco Dia with EF Nib.

Harry,
That is a handsome pen. I am not familiar with Kaweco Dia. Thanks for posting the photo of yours.
It also has a very smooth writting Nib, something not very common for EFs. Excellent balance in hand and nice finishing. Worth trying.
My Pelikan M1000 has finally arrived.
I was ever so slightly worried that it would perhaps be a bit too big.
Now that I have tried it out a bit I am happy to say that it fits my hands perfectly:)
And what a joy this pen is to use!
I put some Pelikan Edelstein Sapphire blue ink in it.
With the EF nib this pen writes wonderfully smooth.
Here is a quick shot of it.

A real beauty Birnando. A grail pen for most. I see your taste in large pens mirrors your taste in large razors. Congratulations on the new acquisition.
Birnando, my friend, a celestial fountain pen. For me, the Pelikan will always remain the ultimate fountain pen.
In fact, a couple of weeks ago I ordered this one:

The craftmanship of the laquer is incredible! Not, errrr ... cheap though. And you have to wait months (in this case 6) before you get your pen.
By the way, what are your thoughts about celluloid fountain pens ?
I adore the material, but given my experience with celluloid razor scales, I'm a bit prejudiced against buying one.
I mean, if I buy a fountain pen, I like the idea that if you treat it well, it will last for ages. With celluloid you know you've bought a time bomb. Or has the process evolved in such a way that decomposing of the celluloid will take much much longer?
Has anyone used cross pens? (No they aren't angry). I saw this Classic Century Classic Black Fountain Pen With 23K Gold Plated appointments Cross the other day and thought it quite stylish, though Probably a bit thin for my hands, but they do do other models.
What about other pens in the below $50 range with a fine - medium nib and a wide ish barrel. I have a Lamy safari with a left hand nib, and whilst it is very reliable (i can leave it weeks and it will just work) i don't like the nib and the body feels cheap, and that is comparing it to a jinhao x450.
Yes, I bought myself a Cross fountain pen a few months back.
In all honesty it is a very fine pen indeed, but as you say, the model I bought was a bit too small for my hands.
The medium nib and the functionality though, was quite alright imho.
I don’t know if this the appropriate thread for this issue, but recently spend my time in two DIY projects:
- a custom box with drawer for my fountain pens and
- a midori like Journal
Although I am far from experienced in such things, I am pretty happy about the result of both projects.

Splendid Harry !
Nice leather you found for that organiser (better than what I found).
Hadn't seen this thread before. I am a FP user, never get used to BPs or RBs, own quite a lot of them (since 100 yo vintages to current models, lots of brands, filling systems, and such), some tools, sacs, books on pen repair (DVDs also).
Rgds.

Look what my old dad made me for Christmas :-) it's a oblique penholder for Spencerian and Copperplate calligraphy handwriting. He's and woodturner and an amazing craftsman. And thou he's nearly 73 years old, he can still do magic. This is a meisterstück and it writes awesome:-)
That is a really bloody nice pen! :)
Mick
Your dad does exceptional work. He's not old at 73. He's a very vibrant in his prime man if he is capable of work like that.
And a writing test :-)
Nice calligraphy, I can only dream of being able to write like that !
Well this was a little odd...
Another Jinhao that I have *no* recollection of having ordered arrived the other day. It's an X450 and, like all the other Jinhao pens I have, is a really impressively nice pen. It has a nice weight, feels solidly made, and even has a wee bit of flex in the nib.
But what worries me is this: am I now buying things in my sleep?
i have at least 6 x450's and my only complaint is the locking mechanism for the lid, they seem to fail pretty easily, so now i have about 3 that the lids stay on, all i do is swap the nib etc into a working body, or if i am feeling really lazy i just put a working lid onto the body that has the ink colour i want loaded in.
i have also just ordered a parker vector, it was about $17 so a reasonable spend compared to my other pens (except the slightly disappointing Lamy).
i bought it for home, when it arrives i will have to decide on what ink to use, i have a bottle of parker blue ink, so i will probably use that.
Hello. Just like a normal dippen. The point is angled so you are able to write Spencerian script.
Me too!
I might have lots of fountain pens, and some dip pen nibs as well (no oblique holder, though... yet?). I have even got some books on calligraphy, and read some on spencerian, copperplate, roman, gothic blackletter, carolingian, and so. Never got to practice, though, and all that reading and hardware is just there "sleeping" and waiting for better times...
Gentlemen, I have been curious about but avoiding this thread like the plague since becoming a member of SRP for obvious reasons.:D
I do not have a specific "need" for a fancy shmansy writing tool as almost all my communications are with the computer.
But after some time reviewing this thread I found that I can become a fountain pen owner for only a few dollars, not much of a downside even if i don't use it.
So i placed an order with Goulet for a 2 Jinhaos X750 and as recommended one of their nibs and a Schmidt converter.
Just for fun i ordered a Hero with Fude nib which may work out well for my 200 or so signatures per month.
Glad to finally make it over here. :chapeau
Welcome Raoul, the jinhao x450's are nice pens, i haven't used a 750. They look similar just with a different grip thingo.
Let us know how you go.
eBay is a really cheap source. I fact it costs pretty much the same to buy a whole pen as it does to get a converter.
Talking of fountain pens and dip pens, posted this on fb the other night as part of a poemy sort of thingy thing. Sort of sums up what I do with a dip pen when I'm in the mood, doesn't it Ed? Ed's fly leaves were from several books all stapled together ;)
"Later, I'll tear the fly leaves from old books and on them in brown ink write letters to those I've never met."
One of my latest ink acquisitions:

Please note that the Midori like Journal is self made

http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps99706876.jpg
Now I am going to have to re learn to write so my messages are legible.
Those are nice looking jars of ink. Expensive?
I really like that piece of leather that holds your note books.
Very manly. :)
Ink bottles are not expensive. Prices range from €4-€20 per 50ml. Graf Von Fabber Castle(top photo on the left) is one of the most expensive ones, about €22 the 70ml.
