At 16, I flipped a truck 3 times and ended up upside down with my leg out the sunroof between the truck and road. Walked away with a few cuts and some muscle damage. Before that, had 75% of my face ripped apart by a dog. He left my throat black but couldn't do me in
Think I mighta flipped ma truck too if'n ah were dravin' after a dawg took unkindly to ma tress-passin' and nibbled some on ma face! :p

When I was 17 I was having an impromptu ski race with some friends after having worked all day. I was tired. It didn't end well. I hit a bump and couldn't recover well. I woke up hanging by a ski that didn't release 20ft down a steep embankment on the side of the slopes. My head and shoulders were resting on the ground. Thankfully I was wearing the helmet I had bought the week before.
Last month of Jr year of University I started having abdominal pains that made it hard to stand up straight and walk. My insurance made it pretty expensive to go to an out if network ER so I waited till Christmas break to go to a Dr.
On the way home I stopped in PA for dinner with grandma and cousins. Thankfully my parents were there so I asked my dad to drive me home.
By the time I got to a Dr I was eating a small bowl of cereal a day and that was it. Walking was tough. Couldn't stand up straight. Couldn't even climb into my lofted bed and just slept in my chair.
They couldn't figure out what was going on so they gave me an antibiotic. Two days later I couldn't eat anything without throwing up.
After 8 hours in the ER I couldn't get comfortable. I was hot and cold at the same time. I was in pain both sitting and standing and after all the tests things were inconclusive but it was certain that I was in septic shock.
So they put me in emergency surgery and opened my abdomen up. Drained off a lot of nasty stuff and cut out half a meter of my small intestine then stitched the pieces back together. Spent 3 weeks on the hospital with a tube shoved down my nose to feed me. Spent 3 more weeks bedridden at home. Spent 6 months with an.open incision that was slow to heal.
And that's how I found out I have crohn's disease. Good times...
To this day I don't recall anything about that dinner or my ride home other than asking my dad to drive.

Thanks. It'll have been ten years this Christmas. No more surgeries but I may be the only person under 50 who gets a colonoscopy every two to three years. With medications it's tolerable. Even though I grew up around it (my dad has crohn's and his little brother has UC) I'm starting to figure more out. Last month I went on my first overnight camping trip that wasn't in a campground in ten years. And I'm going to finish off firearms deer season with the same. I went on an 8 mile back country hike last weekend (some would call it a deer hunt. I'll call it walking aimlessly through the woods with a rifle). I went gluten free a couple months back and it has made a huge difference for me. I was tested for celiac and while I don't have it I have noticed some impressive results by forgoing wheat gluten.Quote:

I have named all of my shaving scars after my stake president-fat bastard.

The one that gives me the creeps is this one: I parked my car in a mall parking lot in the late afternoon and began walking towards the mall entrance. I could feel someone walking behind me. Something told me to turn around. As I turned around the person following me quickly pointed a gun at me. I froze for a long second, he did a double take, chuckled, turned around and ran away towards the parked cars. I was in shock! He had mistaken me for someone else and if I hadn't turned around I wouldn't be here now. What bothers me is that I can't remember the guy's face; if I run into him I wouldn't be able to recognize him. I only remember the gun, a black revolver.
Lucky he didn't shoot you out of hand anyway, I think.

I don't think it was so much a knuckle brawl with the grim reaper so much as it was Someone was watching your Six.
We don't so much cheat death as to be blessed by the Almighty to live one more day. I have stared down the bore of a loaded .44, sank up to my neck in quicksand. I have hung my backside out over a 300 foot cliff because I was stupid. I missed losing my head by a mere 2 inches when a 70 pound chunk of cast iron pipe fell out of a ceiling over 50 feet up. No, I do not believe I beat the grim reaper or cheated death. I was allowed to live one more day.
Not quite a brush with death myself but this afternoon i witnessed a serious accident and was the 1st on the scene. The guy is still alive just... This was his lucky day.

Lets see, fence post through the leg twice, owch. Annnnd...almost drowned at eight, that's it.
While I was in boot camp I started getting horrid chest pains, like something squeezing my lungs, they said it was a digestave tract issue and would clear it self up. fast forward, on the plane coming home from boot camp, I double over and cant breath. Ambulance meets the plane at the termnal to get me, at the ER turns out that I have a perferated gastric ulcer (a hole in my stomach) and need emergancey surgury. Dr said had I been an hour later to the ER I would have been dead. Now I got a sweet scar and and intolarance for spicey foods, but I guess its all worth being able to see the sun every day.
In Iraq my vehicle was hit by an IED (I was the turret gunner) surprisingly not even a bruise from it, directly afterward we were under small arms fire where I could hear the dings on the armor around me, they soon stored when my 50 cal starting singing its tune. Again not a mark on me, so OP still has the title in my opinion, but as they said before when its time your ticket will be punched. That day wasn't it for me but it was for that set of underwear, may they rest in peace.
Hmmm, well, nearly choked on food twice, nearly drowned twice, two pretty serious car wrecks, two motorcycle wrecks, a truck fell on my head (I was standing under it, working at a Firestone and the front-end jack failed), a girlfriend's "future ex-husband" violated a restraining order and was determined to shoot me until he found out how prepared I was to legally shoot him. (That was a proverbial "Mexican stand-off".) I've been on submarines that had things go wrong in situations and places that I can't be too specific about, and last but not least, there's no telling how many bullets, rockets and mortars got too close for comfort in Iraq. (That said, there were a number of other people in Iraq who also had brushes with death before they thought better of trying to out-run my M-16, but I doubt they'll be posting here!)

Used to work with explosives (military) late 80s - 2000ish not much left to break or tear up on my body now.
Rebuilt with titanium, ceramics, steel, skin replacements and so on...

Okay, I guess it's my turn. The highlights are several car accidents, the best being in a Ford Granada that flipped nine times and we walked away from it. Second, get hit by a ricochet .22 in the shoulder, third got slashed in a knife fight and the fourth was when I got clipped on my 750, by a 58 Caddy, the back fin caught my handlebars and through me about 50 feet but luckily I landed on some grass and a second later I heard the thud of the bike landing next to me and walked away unharmed.
However, I think this may be the stupidest thing that anyone here has done, this happened when I was about 18 and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has thrown a match in an empty lighter fluid container and watch the flame shoot up and then get sucked back into the can, However, I was doing this with a 5 gallon Jerry jug that had what I thought were just vapors in it. However, as we all know after a couple of times it runs out of air, glancing about the shop I saw the acetylene torches and green tank, which at the time I assumed was air, as we all know now it's oxygen so I stuck the nozzle into the Jerry jug turned on the O2 and went to pump a car (I was working in a gas station at the time) and when I came back I proceeded to light a match and get back to business. Now, as we all know gasoline vapors and air make a flame, but as we all know oxygen and gasoline vapors Go Boom! When I came to the were five police cars, two fire trucks the owner of the gas station and a mess of blown out windows. By far the dumbest thing I've ever done and I was blown 20 feet across the shop and suffered a concussion for about a month or so. Nothing gets you closer To the Reaper than the stupidity of youth.

climed over one of the steel fences that have the spikes and when it started to shake i started to shit myself.
luckily when i slipped all i caught was shoelace and ripped the leather off the front.
done many other stupied things. another was.
when i was in school did a dare to climb or plastic drainpipe, when i got to the top and heard the clips straining then the odd one brake, got down pretty sharpish
