Like playing music, the ensemble has to have a sense of rhythm that is regular and an ear for the changes. The lead, conductor, sets the tempo and calls the melody. Then there are fellows who can really get some work done, who may need to learn to lighten up the blows, and some who only smite with little taps and the steel seems to only move at a glacial pace.
When a good team is working, it is truly something to behold. This is best seen at 6:15 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14FwhkIrgTs
