2nd almost complete 8/8 chopper

So here is my second razor . still needs scales , still needs to be honed. about exactly 8/8 . 01 steel. Mike Blue, thanks for the great heat treat , will be in touch again.
so , a harbor freight grinder , sears wet grinder , dremel pads for buffing . Not perfect , but not bad . My dream would be a variable speed kmg ginder . That would make getting the semi hollow grind perfectly uniform and getting the sanding marks out easier as i move up in grits . I went to 400 on the harbor freight grinder . then hand sanding up to 1500 grit. ON a side note it took several short sessions and a bucket of ice cold water closer than arms distance away while grinding . making the blade so thin without over heating it on such a fast grinder was not easy. it was like 1, 2, 3 dunk . that fast . then back . little by slow got the blade to where i wanted it .Not every scratch got out from the 400 grit belt but most . Took "lewis razors" advice from his video and did bevel test to see where i needed to grind move to get the bevel even . Now to set bevel , make scales , and finish honing and shave . to say the hobby is fun is an understatement . To make something useful that will last is very rewarding . yeah , i think my wife would kill me . See , I dont have tons of time all at once. so its 30 minutes here or there , say after day after day. so , well, maybe in a few months will have 7 . I would rather sell some , buy a really nice grinder and continue the obsession. :p

The grinding looks great. A KMG with a j-flex belt will definitely let you smooth out places on it like the tail. It also affords you a wider selections of belts that can speed up bits of the process:)

Overall though, great looking razor. If you ever move on to wanting to do your own heat treat, you'd be surprised what great results you can get with just a small forge and a pyrometer. The Atlas mini forge *Atlas Stainless Mini Forge - Forges, Accessories & Tools - Forging Tools & Supplies is really cheap and well made. I think there's a thread on here about it.

Yes, would be great to heat treat myself as well. one more step in the process.

I am thinking of maybe me and my boys taking a black smith course. well, tutorial . You know , pay a fee , go learn, make something, talk to the teacher about straight razor making and such. Boys like making knives. OF course right ? all boys like knives. And who knows. Sell a straight razor i make , one more step to a great grinder. Maybe sell a few of the snare drums i made as well. Functional art is a straight razor to me . Which i love. Make it with your hands , use it , sell it , everyone benefits .
So, set the bevel tonight. Not exactly perfectly even , "I imagine a kmg grinder would help with that as well" , but its not bad either . Cut out the scales and sanded a bit . But just had a Mammoth snow storm today in the north east . we got 28 inches of snow. took a lot of time to clear it . Of course i will post pics as i go along . thanks again for the compliments

Making blades seems like a gift, but it is just hard, smart work.

So here is the bevel set so far. Charlie , I tried to send you a pm with these pics but couldn't for some reason. Anyway , to all. You can see uneven bevel . one pic is one side , one is the other side. thickness of the blade is uneven. but not so much so . So, any ideas what I can do to correct this . the thinnest point of the razor is 0.005 . the thickest is 0.009 .

I think you are doing really well. Your next razor will be a little better and one after that will be a step above that.

To loosely paraphrase what Mike Blue told me, "after your first hundred blades you will start to know what you are doing" that is quoted wrong, but that is the way I interpreted it.

You have done very well thus far, that's a good looking razor that should serve you well.

thanks for all the likes on this one. Still trying to get it honed on the entire blade and shave ready . Boy, that is some work , and patience is needed. tip of blade having trouble getting shave ready , but heel got there quick. So, I am thinking it is just not sitting completely flat on the hone . practice , practice , practice. Got a set of scales on it now also. I will have to post pics at some point .
