this is a very roughly ground custom that i revised from my original design for and rushed through the revised rough grind to get a good feel for the revisions. i also wanted to try a twist in the tail on this one. i forged the sides of the twist flat and then continued with the rough grind to true up the sides of the tang/tail. i like how it came out, not sure i like the overly long tail now though......

It all has to start somewhere, and I think it's a great piece. I particularly like the size and smile on the blade, and the thumb notch, perfect - great job! :rock:

I like the size and smile, I 'think' that I would 'prefer' a shorter tail, but I've found that 99.99% of Everything associated with Straight Razors is Personal Preference.
What matters is how it feels in your hand. I've handled some razors that I didn't like the way they felt when either honing, stropping AND OR shaving. The owners like them and that's what counts.

the original design for this model had a long tail that tucked completely inside the scales and thus didnt interfere at all with the honing and stropping processes and despite the somewhat curvy and "bulky" scales it wasnt inefficient as a design. i just got the whole idea of a twist in the tail stuck in my head and then once i did that i thought the tail needed some curve too hahaha. where it stoped from here im not sure yet but im likely to get too eager to shave with it to play around too much more. if the tail encumbers me at all i can always cut it off later eh?!

Never have shaved with one that long. Lots do like them, so I suspect it is a matter of preference.

In order to end up with a narrow bevel, I grind until the blade passes the thumbnail test. At that point, honing is simple and easy.
