I don't know a great deal about razors but the info I've been given, and tried are that a 5" and 2" wheel are a good combo.
I also have a 10" and 14" wheel and both are far to large. Very little difference in a 6",5" and 4" so middle of the road is my suggestion. If you get a flat platen with your grinder it will probably have a 2" contact wheel so you are better off using that as then you have somewhere to flatten and put tapers on your tang also
I use the 4, 6 and 8 contact wheel the most. For the small wheel attachment I have all sizes available.
+1 on what Maximilian says. Take note : the bigger the wheel, the closer to wedge the grind will be. Double hallows use two sizes close to the same, like 4" and 6". So it all depends on what you want to do. A platen is a must if your going to be thinning scale material shaping long straight lines. Even rounding the top of a tang.
Second thing to think about is belt grit. The cost of your grinder is nothing compared to attachments you can add :<0)
I mostly 2,4,8. My 2 & 4 are on a flat platen & I run the 8 on it's own tool arm. Recently bought some small steel wheels from the guy off ebay from 1/4" up to 1".
So maybe a 5, and a 2 and 4 on a flat plate attatchment will be a good starting point?
I tried every belt on the market and use mostly ceramic up to 240 grit. Not a blaze fan at all. I expected more. For me they don't last nearly as long as the Cubitron II 984F. I favor 3M belts up to 240 grit. Cubitron II, Regalite and Gator belts. In the higher grit belts it's mostly Hermes, Klingspor and the Gators. I do grind a lot of razors plus I like to use fresh belts. It cuts faster & better, stays cooler and you get a better finish.
I haven't got into the longevity part yet but love the blaze belts for the way they stand up to water. Thanks for the tips on belts Max.
Also heard angels singing when I first used a belt cleaner :<0) Best 8 bucks I spent so far.
I think what's important is to try out and see what belts work for your purpose. Some belts do better on carbon, others do better on stainless, etc... Some belts are better for plunge lines or nice shoulders. Some like to use water or misting and others grind solely dry. It really becomes a personal preference.
I've tried several things. I like ceramics up to 240. After that, alox.
I don't like belt cleaners at all. By the time a belt needs cleaning, it has lost a great deal of sharpness already and I'd rather use a fresh belt.
Yet to try a cubitron belt.sounds like it might be worthwhile!!
Do you guys use solid or serrated contact wheels?
Is there a difference?
Sorry for the newbe question...
Mine are all solid. 70 duro. I did get a 4" in 40 duro , 8" in 60 duro. I haven't used too much pressure on the softer ones but they do flatten out some. Can be handy for certain grinds. There is lots to learn about belts and I am still learning. Look up the difference between open coat and closed :<0) Hint,, you may think the closed coat is done for when it actually just needs to be cleaned. Can't do it with the cleaning stick I mentioned before. I use that when I am grinding scales.
2 4 and 8 inch wheels and all ceramic belts up to 220 .I don't use contact wheels on my flat platen it's just a pain to try and use it that way, each of my wheels have a dedicated tool arm and it just takes seconds to change them .
I have heard that they have changed the "glue" on Blaze belts recently. The black gummy platen syndrome was why I went over to the Cubitron 984's a couple o years back after several years of using Blaze.
I use a 4 and various smaller ones for razors, I also like having the wheels on their own arm instead of the flat platten, just too much going on when I need to focus on the wheel. I like the blaze in the really big grits, but if I can use a gator, that's my pick hands down. They just produce beautiful and easily controllable grinds for me.
Just set this up for grinding razors. For whatever reason, having the larger wheel has dramatically improved tracking. I also have a 4", 5" and smaller wheels down to 1/4" on separate arms.
