Ready for he HT! New file work

I'm working on this 7/8 razor and tried some new things on it... One is the jimping with a file 20 lines per inch... I wasn't too happy with the results I think that it might have something to do with the fact that the surface wasn't flat? I dunno I'll play more with it later lol... Next is the file work, I tried something new on this barbers notch....

now to throw her in my heat treat and hope to do the finish grinding with that I hope that fixes the bumps that happened during rough grinding...

What are you grinding with ?
It looks like you could use more taper in the tang. Might be the pics.
The jimps don't look bad from here. With practice you'll be able to do it on a rounded top tang.

Yeah I'm having a bit of a blast... I'm grinding on my 2x72 grinder I made.... I agree I think the tang could of been tapered a bit more but I got some where I liked and was afraid to move on....

Pulled the grind line (or whatever the term is) back a bit to try and cover those debts.... It didn't end up straight which is just from inexperience... So just still working out the kinks... I hope to have a personal custom razor of my own soon... Nothing is more satisfying then shaving with something you made on ur own... Fingers crossed!

Waiting for my oven to arrive hahaha... I ordered it from tru-grit and I guess it still ships from evenheat so it's going to take forever

When I first started grinding I forced patience by using fine belts. The temptation to get it done quick will cost you every time. At least until you get some good habits built up. If you go to the edge of the wheel don't stop and back up, things like that. I also start out with a small wheel and once I get a nice centered hallow I slowly work up in diameter. Everybody has their own way of learning but I have helped my friends get the hang of it and I start them out the same way. It's all about practice :<0) Your doing good so far. I have mostly used mine for restoring and my first blade has been waiting on an oven for waaaay too long. It gets here tomorrow so the fun really begins for me now.

Which one did you pop for ?

Found your grinder. Mine is a real Frankenstein. My oven thread will pop up tomorrow IF the oven ever gets out of Tonopah AZ. It's been camped there since Fri. noon. Sometimes I hate tracking :<0)

I actually haven't gone up in grits I've been using the 80 grit belt for the rough grinding... Do you go though the grit progression before HT? I was just going to go to 120 240 400 after HT... The Evenheat artisan is the one I got, tracking does suck sometimes I have called a few times like "why the hell is it stuck!" Hahaha

But thanks, I'm really trying... I think I'm going to just get a hold of the basics then really try and do something uniuqe... We will see though, time will tell

Well I forged my blade and then ground it out. It has a lot of detail to it. I did start with 120 and as I got closer to what I wanted I went finer. I have belts up to 1200 which IS too fine for before heat treat but I was looking to see what I could accomplish before I popped for the oven. I punched a hole it and annealed it so it is scaled and ready for more. But after HT it will be grind blade, clean,scale and hone.

The point I was making about the fine belts is they gave me time to get the feel of using the grinder before I took off too much material. If I made a mistake it wasn't to hard to get out and less likely to make again.

Wow I see exactly what u mean that's a great suggestion! Thanks! I have the problem of one little slip then boom debt in blade... Thank you!

Would help you to notice the heat too, too hot for the thumbs...too hot for a post ht blade.

The blade looks a bit like it has a frown. It could be the angle of the camera as well. If it has a frown, best fix that before HT because after, it will be harder.

Good eye! Yes the blade is at a frown... It's already been HT but thankfully my wife caught that and asked if it's supposed to do that... I looked at her like I was looking though her and walked away lmfao...

Ummm.... So I just realized something :( I don't know how much of a screw up this is but.... I fixed that frown not realizing I was losing the scribe line... In the future this is definitely something that is going to be shaped then scribed.... I know that One side was favored more than the other and I remember where those places were but no longer have the center line... Sooooo.... I'm going to hold off and see if someone has suggestion otherwise I'm just going to give it my best and call this trail and error....

Thanks for the info! I actually just head some interesting info myself... Evenheat is coming out with an app that's automated to their HT for an extra $100

Nope no oven yet...

For the push button controller which is another 250 ? I looked at that but not sure I need a controller with bluetooth and usb so I can reset temps and change times while I am at Starbucks :<0) I got the Rampmaster and after it shipped I saw the vids with all the preset cone temps on RM2 and panicked. When it got here it had Rampmaster 3 with old style temp settings phew . If you saw me unbox mine I missed the plug that covers the top vent hole. Don't throw away the packing till you find it .It was inside some of that foam stuff. Almost missed it.

Ah! I thought I had missed out on something... Someone was telling me only an extra hundred bucks for it...: $250? I dunno if I would pay that much more... Yeah I'll have to check the packing for that

If I may make a suggestion: stop using scribe lines, and start using your eyes.
If you look at your razor from different angles, and along the edge, you will see a lot more than a scribe line ever could, and you can easily tell if the edge is straight or crooked. Also if you want to keep an eye on the geometry while you are grinding, all you need to do is just lay it flat on your bench, and keep an eye on how the razor would 'roll' if you were honing.

I used to make scribe lines when I was making my first razors. But the problem I was facing was that I forge my razors, so it is not possible to make scribe lines and measure parallel lines or right angles. Learn to look at your razor, and you'll start seeing everything you need to know. Scribelines and jigs are crutches imo.

That's actually great advice! that should help me out a great deal being able to look at a razor and know vs a line thank you!

Bruno is right there and I would also suggest you watch the stria as you grind. Your scratch pattern will show you what your doing as you do it. Nice and even scratches means nice and even lines. Now just think of everything at once and go for it LMAO.

Definitely avoid jigs especially when you are a newbie. First learn the hard way which is free hand. Get your technique going. Once you master everything you will be in a much better position to know what works for you and what you need to do to achieve something. Trying to lose a bad habit or technique is very hard as everything we do is muscle memory. A few big names and makers once told me, first grind your first 100 razors and then we'll talk again.

First and foremost I would like to say I absolutely love ur work max! I have so many of ur razors actually saved before I really knew it was u... Noticed I favored these razors with "max" etched on them used the Google machine and found max speecher...

That's kinda what I was thinking about going without the scribe lines...only makes sense to do it with everything! I'll see what u can do on my next razor... I'm going to be starting it today!!! Thanks guys!

In the beginning we all tend to look around but eventually you have to come up with your own style and personality. I can see many copying me from miles away or trying to copy other makers. Most people active in the shaving community aren't blind either and know exactly who's who. By coming up with your own style you identify yourself as a unique entity. By copying anyone you'll always be known as second and non original only hurting yourself in the long run.

Yeah I have talked to another maker about that... I had no idea it was that bad but you know nothing is like the original, but I can understand where that would be frustrating.... I was only admiring your work... But I couldn't agree more why be second?

I think I'm just going to move on for both these razors and start making the scales... This ones blade face is bigger than I wanted, I also wanted to make the taper on the shank more but it just didn't work out lol.... The point of this razor had two angles near the spine instead of my normal one... There isn't going to be any file work or anything on this one... i asked my mother in law which of the designs she liked and she picked this one, it actually was the last conversation I had with her.. She said she liked how simple the design was,. So I'm going to be giving it to her husband as a gift with some purple scales.... I hope this works out...
