Question about making a razor.

I have a buddy that has a metal shop and makes lots of custom stuff. one of the things he makes is spikes for leather jackets and dog collars and what not.There are alot of metal heads in my area. Anyway the spikes he makes are heat treated and sharpened. I wonder if that means that i could have him make a razor for me.. What kind of metal should i go buy? carbon steel i guess but i don't really know anything about it. i could really use some ideas about what to buy. thank you.

1085 would work and IIRC one of the easyer ones to treat

+1. Anything with about 85 points of carbon is ideal. Good hardness without complicated or expensive heat treatments.

Also consider good old O-1. You can find flats at most machine shops or online at ENCO or MSC. It's nearly ancient in the modern day knife world and remains underrated. Nearly foolproof heat treatment as long as you get the right temperatures.

Yup, and as with most other things, all one needs to do is get right the things which need to be gotten right. And, unfortunately, it is those petards which hoist me all too often.
