Recommendation needed
I need a recommendation for a buffer. Variable speed (starting at 1725 or less), 1/2 horse. I could refit a grinder but I don't like buffing in such close proximity to the motor, and I think variable speed is a major plus. What are you guys using and where are the lowest prices? Thanks very much.

If you are at 1725 rpm, there is no need to have variable & I would recommend 1/2 horse as a minimum. You can look at the classified's like Craigs List & stuff, but good luck. The Baldor buffers are about as good as it gets as they are specifically made for buffing.

I have the Baldor 1/4 horse at 1800 and I really like it. I also have a Harbor Freight at (max) 3600 or some such, and it serves it's purpose, too.
Variable speeds on a quality buffer add a lot to the price (at least on the ones I was looking at). Given that you can accomplish nearly the same result by varying your wheel size, I didn't see much point. But I did pick up the higher speed HF because it was cheap and it was on sale, and the speed can be nice sometimes.
With regards to power - well, I don't use my buffer as much as the guys who offer resto services probably do; I'd say I use it as much as the average hobbiest. I have yet to find a situation where I wish I had more power, and my buffer has been rock solid for about a year now. I suppose if you are safe about using it and can afford it, more power isn't a bad thing, though.

Acme Tool sells a 8 inch variable for around $80. Lowe's sells the 6 inch for about the same price. Lowe's also has good buffs. Janz knifemakers supply sells greaseless compound.
