Collection milestones

When i first started collecting razors and hones, i had no idea where Straight razor shaving was going to take me. After 6 months i had already collected some of the smaller items i most wanted, so I set some new goels that i though would both be achievable and unachievable. Over time, before i released many of my goels have already been fulfilled.

A couple of days ago i finally broke the 100 hone barrier, a collection achievement i thought would be out of my reach and yet again i have proven my self wrong.

Although i still have many things on my list to still do and collect, i though i would celebrate this milestone and find out what everyone else’s goels are, what they never thorough they would have achieved yet did and what new goels they have set themself for the future.

100 hones takes up surprisingly less room then i though it would lol

Big thanks to all the guys at SRP who have helped me over the years! Looking forward to posting my 1000 hone milestone next hehe

That is a nice collection. I have never been the collect anything type. After I got interested in SR shaving I found Dubl Ducks. I set the goal of a 7 day set and well I am working on my 4th set now. I have collected a lot of DD stuff besides razors so I guess without a real goal I am building my own Dubl Duck museum. It's not a lot of stuff but a lot of different stuff. My real goal is to make this hobby pay for itself. I hope to start making razors someday soon. It would be great to have a small razor store/shop and promote the use and help those who want to try/use a straight.

It' sfunny, I was never into collecting either. I blame the guys at SRP for making me spend all my money on razor stuff :P

I'm having a LOT of fun doing so though hehe

My all time goal is to find a labeled Escher at an antique store. I don't want to ever buy one from a website. Its my pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Its also like finding a needle in a hay stack. I also really love the hunt, it floats my boat!! :)

I look at that pile of hones and just think wow. Can I come over and hang out with your hones for a couple of weeks. My collecting is not anywhere near that focused. I have a little of this and a little of that. That is most impressive. My goals at this point are more to do with the refinement of skill. I'd like to be able to hone better, or really just very consistently, that takes practice and time.

It does take a lot of practice to get the smoothness, especially all the way across the blade but its a great feeling once you can achieve this successfully! Every blade, every hone has its one unique characteristics so don't feel bad if you can hone one well and not another straight away. Good luck with it! :D

I have my prefered hones although i do try to bring them all out at some point. Still have some learning to do on quite a few as well.

It doesn't look like anyone is too keen, but if the meet does EVER happen, then I was hoping you would show me, so it appears we are at our first impasse :)

That's not quite so impressive sounding, though doing one to two passes on each stone may become wearisome.
Have you worked out the corrrect order from coarsest to finest if you were to use them all?

yeah, coarsest to finest is easy, what works best for what steel is the hard part. Most the stones are around the 6-16K mark, leaving my few ultra fine polishers 20K+ and my coarse 800-4k stones..

I had 60 + at the height of my AD. Down to about 20 waterstones and 5 oil stones. Enjoy them while you have them, we ain't taking anything with us when we go ....... :)

I would have though you would have had thousands!!! I asked my wife what she would do with them once I did go.. She said she would keep my favourites for my unborn son (2 months to go!) and she would sell the rest of them on here... so, If I'm suddenly selling 100+ stones on SRP you will know why lol

Ok, you'd get on with a train driver called Jamie that I know, he collects consoles and games and is a train nut, in fact he bought a train simulator for a console he had, found out it only works on a Japanese versioN of the console so he bought one of those too.

Like 10 pups I am doing a DD 7 day set. I replace the handles with poly pearl. (I am afraid of cell rot, and most already are goners)
After that, a henckels 7 day in exotic woods.
I also plan on making it pay for itself, and even thought about retiring and going to Barbers school so I can open a shop.
Never got into all the hones though, but you sure have a nice collection.
I do have 3 barbers hones, and a set of nortons.

They do show up even if someone was there the day before. I have seen two go out of favored stores after i had been there within two days. Yup, I did find some also. Your time will come!

I thought the hone collection was really something. Now I picture 15 kids waiting on your doorstep for you to get home everyday. I hope this show is not visible from an open window. It would scream steal me.
