Just the number we need to justify SR use.
From the article:
We did some number-crunching in the On The Cheap lab and figure this gift could save your father $2,112.50 over 20 years if it prevents him from using expensive disposable cartridges. Just make sure he doesn't get Mark's mysterious "disorder."

I would like to know of these $30 new razors they mention.
Rofl..........that's the reasoning I gave my wife for splurging the just over £200 on a razor, strop and 12k stone. The problem is the 11 razors, crox powder, pining material, veg tan leather (a full shoulder is actually much bigger than I thought and will make more than a couple of strops) and various other bits and bobs I've bought in the last couple of months !
I wonder how many more of us thought it would save us money lol
Admittedly, I have not read the article or watched the video, but the savings quoted above seem rather odd - is it too cheap or too expensive? Have a look at the costs quoted by The Sharpologist for another point of view. They quote the Gillette Fusion proglide and assume each cartridge lasts for 14 shaves. They also factor in the initial price of the handle and a new handle every 2 years, all for $98 a year, despite the fact that the cheapest they could find a 4 pack set of cartridges for was $28.40 and they assume $10.97 for the handle. Over 20 years that works out at $1,960.
Lets do a worst-case scenario. How much do replacement cartridges cost in the US? Depends where you buy them, I suppose. Just for instance, Walmart sell a 4 pack of cartridges for the Wilkinson Sword Tech3 for $5 and a 4 pack for the Tech4 for $4.47. Fastech sell a 4 pack for the Gillette Fusion Power for $6.95 and amazon.com sell the same thing for an amazing $30.99 - something very wrong there, so lets ignore the amazon offering. I suspect that The Sharpologist used Amazon! But maybe not - Walmart sells a 4 pack for for the Gillette Fusion Proglide for a massive $34.97. Well knock me sideways...
How often should you replace your cartridge? The Grooming Lounge reckon every 3 to 4 shaves. Back in the day I replaced my blades at much longer intervals, but we will go with the GLs recommendation. Say you shave 7 days a week, then you will use two cartridges in a week. You may well have a tough, wiry beard, I suppose. There are 52 weeks in a year, which makes 104 cartridges. 20 yrs x 104 = 2080 cartridges. Divide that by 4 for a 4 pack and we have 520 no. 4 packs. The average price of the three 4 packs above is $5.47, multiply that by 520 and we get $2,844. Add another, say, $50 dollars for replacement handles (unlikely) and the total comes to $2,894.
Realistically, I would use one cartridge a week, maybe even make it last for two weeks. Using 2 weeks per cart I would get through 26 cartridges a year, and 520 in twenty years. 520 divided by 4 for a 4 pack comes to 130 4 packs, x $5.47 per 4 pack comes to $711.10, plus $30 for three handles (more likely) comes to $741.10.
So, the savings quoted are indeed either too little or too much. Personally I would spend a fraction of that cost as I went from cartridges to a Gillette Fat Boy many, many years ago, and the blades are a fraction of the prices quoted above and I still have the original handle.
Regards,
Neil
Very cool, now they know about RAD!
Does this mean we're all cheap skates?
Good to see a member spread the word...
I think I just seen a spike in vintage razor sales go up, and the cost to buy them........lol
Just proves there are better reasons to change shaving gear other than the monetary one. I mean, if $100.00 a year over 20 years is going to make or break you then you have bigger problems other than shaving.
Bob
I've never shaved with a cartridge, but I know I've saved a ton of money since I started shaving as a hobby!
NOT!!
I've got enough soap, EDT, and After Shave Lotions to last me ten years. And that does not take into account probably forty razors. eight strops, and countless shave brushes of all kinds ...
Yeah, I've saved big dollars! :rofl2:
