My FIRST Gold Dollar!!!

Okay so, to start this (my First) thread off properly; HI 😀...After nearly 20 years of shaving, I just now find a forum dedicated to said event - and boy, am I happy!!!Being 40 years old I may be a bit young to have learned with a straight razor as a young man, but; THAT I DID...I come from a good family who raised me to be frugal in every area that I can.So naturally, when it came time to learn how to shave; The first thing I picked up was a straight razor!!!Around the age of 35 I discovered the Gillette MachIII and made the switch for a couple of years when One morning, out of the blue it hit me ~ "dude, I miss my old razor"...Long story short, I went henceforth back to my razor!!!Anyway, moral of the story ~ browsing the likes of eBay I noticed these "Gold Dollars" and was immediately intrigued .....So I ordered one from KYHS and have to say, "for the money, this is the best razor that I've bought on the cheap in my entire life!!!"...So for the next few weeks I will allow my Bismark to rest while I put my new GD to work in the daily shave routine...As happy as I am with my first shave, I will no doubt be as satisfied if not more after I've adjusted to this new blade ☺️One last thing, I have always honed my own razors, set the bevel and what I find to be that "sweet spot" for me / to final hone and polish; but I have to give a shout out to Lee over at KYHS... He really knows what he's doing and I would trust him with any of my razors!!!Once again, I am so happy to have found this forum of like-minded shavers!!!Cheers

I have heard that the Gold Dollar's are good razors and that they have pretty good steel. I have also heard that it's best to buy them from a reputable shop, as you did, so that they can get them shave ready. It appears that the edge on those sold through discount sites such as eBay is somewhat lacking.

There is a lesson here. 1 razor for 20 years ? That in itself is a record around here.

Now, I am going to start a pool. The square you buy will be a razor maker name. If he buys that razor you win and it starts a new game.

What hones do you use ? I ask this because your probably breaking another record around here. It would also be nice to know if your using a barbers hone or if you hobby knives and have a pile of hones.

The Chinese make lots of stuff and are getting better at some. Just not razors, IMO.

HEY! It's not funny! :D I got conned into trying one under the guise of a Titan. Put that sucker down quick! Even after the best efforts of a good honer, it sucked. Steel is not there, nor is the grinding. Like shaving with a Chinese pocketknife. You can do it, but why? :shrug:

I think your wording is interesting "I would trust him with any of my razors". Firstly you say that you have owned one razor for years and hone it yourself, that you are frugal etc, then on the other hand went to the expense of buying a gold Dollar honed by someone else.
sorry for my skepticism but this feels like an advertisement.

I have bought 2 gold Dollar 66's one was ground differently on both sides and the other, whilst it did eventually take an edge was a horror to hone.

I have been honing since boyhood (Boy Scouts started it all off) and worked in a meat packing plant where we undertook weeks of honing training...
Took a few classes at the local community College in my 20's...
So yeah, I've a PILE of hones lying about the kitchen. Haha...
Most are Norton made...
Grits from 240 all the way to 12K...
A handful of strops I've made during my chap & boot making heyday...
I only ever bought ONE pre honed razor - the GD from KYHS...
I have another that I honed at home, bevel needed SERIOUS work but I got it done in less than one hour so no big deal...
Razors last FOREVE if properly cared for (stropped more than honed) ��
But, I own more than just my Bismark!!!
I've a DOVO that takes second duty

Well, welcome TerryDean. Good you have some razors. GD is a problem-causing subject and seems unwelcome at times.
Good you have some other modern-production blades there as well. All sold by KYHS, perhaps?

welcome I have a gd 66 that i got shave ready for 23 bucks and a 208 that I got for 18 off the bay and spent some time honeing them myself. I can get a three pass bbs with either. I was new to sr shaving, didnt know if I would like it and I wanted a new razor and didnt want to spend a bunch. The gd fit the bill and alowed me to learn to hone. yes the one i honed took alot of work but mind you it was the first razor ive ever honed and i shave with it dailey... It works and it got me to you guys, same as it did him. If you guys would rather he not shave with a razor he likes, then you guys should buy him one that you want him to shave with and im sure he will use it ..... heres my babys what gd did you get? Back up razor is a natural idea I think. I have over a hundred backups :<0) I think Tom has 4. 2 of them Gold Dollars.

I also have two GD's downstairs that I started to learn honing on, they both shave fine....

This is such a touchy subject here I'm surprised it's lasted this long. That said I've always admired GD customs. I plan to buy a stock GD to play around with.

And BTW, I don't find disagreeing or questioning ungentlemanly at all.
I do find misrepresenting your self in a forum to promote an eBay page quite distasteful. I was hoping that wasn't the case and he was just excited about shaving. But unfortunately went away before it could be sorted.

Well, you don't really like to bash anyone but there have been a lot of people sign up to promote their own selling agenda so a lot of members have a jaundiced eye for that sort of thing. Quite a few of these trolls come back again and again after being repeatedly banned. It gets old real quick. Not saying this is the case here but you get the idea.

Am I excited about shaving? Sure. Do I feel that I need to defend myself to people I don't even know, and will likely never meet? No way.
Sure, I am excited about my newest acquisition and only wanted to spread what I thought it was good news; that there are after all, blades to be had on the cheap...
Did I expect to find this kind of opposition here on the supposedly Gentlemens forum?
No...I sure didn't...
For now, I reserve judgment on this form until I get a better feel for its inhabitants...
Until then, I'll stay along the sidelines and just let my eyes decide whether or not I need to spend anymore time here...

The problem is that the 'new guy' is having trouble stringing a consistent story that doesn't scream Troll.

Here's what he is telling us about himself:
- from age 20 to age 35 shaving with a straight razor because he's from a good family and frugal
- avid honer of knives and razors with a big arsenal of hones and lot of skill how to use them well
- at age 35 around 2009 switches to Mach III (introduced in 1998, battery version in 2001) at a time when Gillette is pushing hard with marketing and freebies their next product Fusion (introduced in 2006)
- supposedly has more than one razor he can hone well from really poor edge in no time
- he is frugal and subscribes to one razor will last forever, so he doesn't really need many razors, though he has a few and is very particular about honing them to his exact taste
- he is immediately intrigued when seeing the Gold Dollar razors on ebay (why not by the Kriegar, Beauty and Barber, Kamisori, Damascus and any other equally advertised brand as the GD will remain a mystery)
- he orders one pre-honed and is immediately amazed by the wonderous shave after the very first one. So much that he abandons his trusty Bismarck - we must remember it's honed to his exacting standards, so the new one beating it means only one thing:
- comes right away to let us all know how great that seller "Lee" is and why we all should trust him with all of our razors like he did
- when some inconsistencies in that BS story are pointed out to him it's all our fault, because GD is some sort of 'sensitive subject' which makes us attack him for no reason
- so he has put us on notice and reserve judgement about how gentlemanly this community is - we're apparently simply hostile to innocent 'new guys' with nothing more on their mind but excitement with straight shaving

I am sorry, but this stinks. My advice - next time you come to shill your services, come up with a better story. Even better advice - if you can hone so well Gold Dollars and other razors how come your many happy and satisfied customers don't come back for honing and refer you their friends, but you have to come to SRP to shill and look for new business?
