What to look for in a shave den cabinet?

My wife would like me to get a razor/shaving cabinet for our bathroom to organize my stuff. She found, as an example, the one pictured below on Etsy. However, the woodworker who made it will build custom designs. What features would you want to have in a cabinet like this? I'm thinking it should have at least a couple shelves for soaps, aftershaves, etc. I like the hanging brush storage, but maybe five would be enough. (Either that, or I have not gotten the brush acquisition bug yet!) Maybe a drawer would be nice, and maybe a small section with a door.

Right now, my razors are on the dresser in the bedroom, in a test tube rack from Amazon. She really wants them in the new cabinet. I told her about the concern with humidity, but fortunately the bathroom is roomy enough that it is not too bad. But maybe I should have the razor section enclosed, with a glass door.

I like the type that you can recess into the wall. Doesnt stand out or have as many opertunities cor things to get knock off. Lots of options if your going to have one made. I like to have just a couple things in the bathroom and keep most of my stuff elsewhere. So keep that in mind. You dont neex to have every razor and brush and soap on hand in the bathroom.

Just something else to think about when figuring out what you want to have made.

Honestly, though, the one you're looking at is probably more practical for serious razor display. I would be afraid to have an enclosed cabinet in a bathroom, and in fact run a dehumidifier in mine as necessary. In fact, I'm considering getting something like that mostly for razors, and keep the glass-fronted one I have more for "apothecary" stuff as my wife calls it: soaps, brushes, cool after-shave bottles, DE's, etc.

The most important thing is whatever size you are looking at buy bigger, much bigger because down the road you will need it.

That is sage advice! I remember wondering why I would need with 2 razors.

That depends on what you want to achieve, I think. At the current going rates, filling the Etsy rack with cut-throat and safety razors, and brushes actually worth displaying would set you back by US$ 10,000.

Unless you want to showcase mediocre razors, in which case yes, buy bigger, much bigger.

I had to laugh at that remark, cause I'm not far from that.

I got a whole wall in the den almost filled, and a small shelf on the towel rack that my wife uses for her stuff.

I agree with those that say it should not be in the bathroom if you have a place in the bedroom where a proper cabinet/shelf combination would be acceptable to both of you that would be best. If not, as a compromise, you might consider a smaller version of what you posted in the bathroom for aftershave, brushes and soaps, with a drawer(s) for odds and ends -- styptic, , DE blades, etc.

Then you could use either a smaller display or a nice storage box, like a small flatware or fountain pen case with separators and room for a desiccant pack for the razors.https://www.amazon.com/Pencil-Founta...s%2C167&sr=8-9

I'm going to have to disagree. If a person has things they think are worth displaying, then for them they're probably not considered "mediocre", but instead are valued possessions. Build it to suit you and your wife, pincorrect (and plan to expand it). ;)

I recently picked up this Curved Glass hanging curio cabinet. It was made and sold by The Bombay Company, so there are a lot of them out there.

They sold originally for about $200-300 in the 90’s and you can find them for under $100. I have seen them at antique stores and flea markets, but are usually pretty beat up. It is 25X21X6. I will remove the shelves and like the mirrored back.

This one is near pristine. I have been looking for ideas for razor storage and do like the Zilla system for holding razors, though I am thinking of slotting the top bracket that will hold the razor at 45-degree angle and back a few degrees to keep in place. I am looking to stuff as many razors as I can in it.

It is 25X21X6. I will remove the shelves and make new supports, I do like the mirrored back. and plan to add a lock, for the grand kids.

I am already looking for another, for brushes. This is not my cabinet, it is an ebay photo, mine is in storage.

Maybe something like Mike's nice cabinet with drawers would work on the dresser. (Perhaps a bit smaller in my case.) Was this custom-made for straight razors?

I like that idea. It might be easier to find something off the shelf made for fountain pens. I like the idea of drawers, like the one in Mike's picture.

What might be even better would be drawers that supported the razors at the front and the back, but had open bottoms instead of a bottom panel. Then you could tuck dessicant packs in the very bottom, below the lowest drawer, and the air could circulate throughout. I wonder if anyone makes one like that?

Those are some nice cabinets in this thread! If little ones have a chance to go near it, you might want to consider a lock for the cabinet.

Here's another question. The cabinet at the start of this thread (which I posted just as an example) has two rows of brush holders. When I bought an individual brush holder for my countertop (from West Coast Shaving), they had a variety of sizes. I think mostly with 27mm or 30mm openings for the brushes. I got the 30mm because the handle of my brush has a flared shape and the end of the handle that this fit nicely. But if you wanted to hang the brush at the knot, you would choose the size of the stand based on the knot size of your brush.

So for a cabinet like the one I pictured, how would you choose the right size for the brush holders? Or maybe would you get some small and and some large?

I keep my dry brushes standing on their base and they only hang out in the inverted holder for a day while they are drying. Also I do not keep my brushes in the same cabinet with my razors. My razor cabinet also has silica gel and VCI emitters in it to help prevent corrosion.

I knew about silica gel, but I had to google "VCI emitters". Very cool!

Harold we have had over 10ft of snow already this winter and you can always count on at least one last bad snow storm in late Feb/early March.... So i will be ecstatic to look at anything other than snow right now.. :)

And showing my wife pics of much larger cabinets than mine I can use that great short statement of "See I told you I need more" :)
