You Will Get Bored

It is inevitable, there comes a moment into this "shelter in place" where boredom will rear its ugly head. There are many ways to avert this happening and I'm sure we all have those "projects" needing our attention but I can't believe we all have a never-ending list of them to keep us occupied. The big "B" will hit sooner or later. I am going to list possible ways to modify the boredom phase of this self isolationism.

Are you an avid hot water, hot lather shaver? Try a cold water shave (or any temp you haven't tried before.)

Never used an alum bar? Try it to check levels of irritation after a shave.

Always built your lather in a scuttle/bowl/cup? Try face lathering.

Got a brush you don't like? Try it again, maybe with a different soap.

And finally, only shave with your dominant hand? Try working on training your non-dominant hand. How? Well, for starters get a disposable razor (yes you can write that here) for minimal chance of cutting yourself and shave very carefully. It might take quite a few attempts (like we don't have the time and have to be somewhere else at that moment) and slowly that hand will respond to the repetition and become as agile as your good hand. Then switch to a safety razor (double or single) and finally a straight. Believe me, the time spent trying what we generally avoid for various reasons will pay off and your spirits will thank you. Plus you suddenly find you have new skills.

Boredom eh? What do all the guys in state prison do? Take a cue from them.

So if you be bored just think of the alternative and just abandon all caution and go out and socialize and have a good time.

Then you can have good freedom sick in bed, or stuck in a hospital bed or on a ventilator or lying in a casket.

As they say "Your Funeral".

When I took up playing the harmonica and playing chess, I joked that that was two things that I could do in the park if I ended up homeless.

Now I'm still in a house and can play my harmonica, and play chess on line.

Got a wood lathe and plenty of wood, guess I may concentrate on turning some lathering bowls............

I've got lots of razors that need refreshing, and since my gym closed, I've taken up running to burn my mental energy.

Always did elliptical, rowing machine and free weights - now I've been "learning" to jog/run.

First time out, I ran 1.75 km's without a break, second run 2 km, 3rd run did 3 km without a stop, and next run I'll try and do 5 km, not rushing anything, as there's plenty of time.

One thing I've noticed about the running, you can see how it turns you into a tank and drives every muscle in your body, been feeling really good and tight since starting. I can see why the military relies on running so much.

Other than that, been shining my pairs of boots and shoes, loaded up my Kobo with some more books, and since I'm a gamer, digging down deep into Destiny 2 and Halo, and about to download the new Doom on Steam.

My dad was born on his grandfather's homestead which is located on what's called Valentine Ridge and that homestead was 15 miles from the nearest town.

They get a lot of windstorms out there during the winter and not only the lane that leads to the counties gravel road would blow full of snow but the gravel road would also and that was for miles and miles.

So due to the storms, his family would be 'Snowed In'. They could trudge through the snow to take care of the livestock but other than that they were restricted to being in the house sometimes for weeks.

They did a lot of jigsaw puzzles and while he'd never admit to it, his mother (my beloved 'Granny) told me that he knew how to knit, quilt and crotchet as that's what they did when snowed in.

Dad continued his love doing jigsaw puzzles though out his life. I once saw a puzzle advertised as 'The Worlds Hardest Jigsaw Puzzle'--it was just wavy line after wavy line and there wasn't any border--just the irregular ends like on the inside that you matched up.

I bought it for him and after he's opened it up and saw that there wasn't any edge pieces he tossed it! He didn't even try.

When I gave him some shite about not even trying it. He held up one finger--I don't think that he was telling me that I was #1 in his book!!!:rofl2:

I've taken up learning to play the acoustic bass guitar with a guidebook by Laurence Canty. Starts out with some muscular stretching exercises on the G string from the second (fret) position. Not so easy for me as my hands are average sized. But even from yesterday, there's been an improvement. Sort of reminds me of "muscle memory" as discussed with straights in starting out and slowing down with stropping to ensure even contact while alternately picking with the fore and middle fingers.

I understand the Oregon Prison System will pay you to make license plates.

I'm still able to go to work but i do always get 3 day weekend and since church has been canceled it makes the weekend seem longer. Like most here i have plenty of razors to work on and with my new hobby of blacksmithing there is always something to learn and make (as long as i don't run out of propane). Got a new bowling ball to make brush handles out of so that is something else to do. Won't run out of projects any time soon.

Hi guys, I assure you as a New Jersey Health professional, I am anything but bored right now. Enjoy It!! I'm starting to hate soap, except the shaving variety of course. Boredom is just lack of inspiration, find something you have always wanted to do and do it. Now is a good time. People should focus on the now tomorrow is uncertain. @Brontosaurus I am happy you took up and instrument and yes it is about muscle memory more that anything. you can know what to play but to actually does it takes practice and repetition till it just flows. So is wet shaving still a thing? Maybe since all the barber shops are closed.:rofl2:

I work in an insurance office. LOT of service work right now and coverage questions related to the virus.

Being the Gasman my job wont stop. It will slow a bit but some people will still be driving. My thoughts to help give others something to do is clean your garage and storage areas. For some of you i bet that could takes weeks to sort thru. Then if you have time bindge watch a tv show. Although id rather clean someone elses storage than to stare at the TV for hours! :cen
Just an Idea.

I can't remember the last time I was bored. I grew up in the early 50's in a small town in Idaho, prior to television, and with party lines. Flying somewhere else was on airline with propellers. We built forts in the back yard, and built with Erector Sets and Lincoln Logs inside. I enjoy listening to Roy Rodgers, The Lone Ranger, Hopalong Cassidy, Fibber McGee and Molly, and Jack Benny. We read The Hardy Boys, or Nancy Drew, and whittled whistles out of sticks. We played Old Maid and Monopoly and Pick Up Sticks. We were never bored. I stopped seeing patients in my office last week, but am set up to start telemedical conferencing on Monday. I've enjoyed time to hone a few razors, walk my dogs, spend time with my wife of 52 years, and read. Although I generally read two to three books every week, there are thousands that I won't get to before I die. Worried about the state of affairs, of course, but never bored and I always have something to look forward to.

Your youth sounds a lot like mine--with the exception that I was born in Pomeroy WA which is about 30 miles from Clarkston WA which is just across the river from Lewiston ID. Where in ID do you grow up in? Just wondering :shrug:

Also I had a Lionel train set with an oblong track set up and my siblings and I would watch it go round and round and round as if hypnotized by the train.

Simpler times but Good Times at the same time. :tu

Twin Falls, Idaho, which in the late 40's and early 50's only had a population of 15,000, but now it's up to a whopping 49,000! The area was called Majic Valley, and it was a wonderful place to grow up.

Oh man, 15,000 is the big city. I too grew up with the wild outdoors to occupy time. I often spend the better part of three weeks at work to figure out what to do with my evenings. This three weeks stint is a little more restrictive than most as far as our freedom of movement goes. I bake, do some sketching, a little scrimshaw, sometimes I hone razors or work on restorations. I can drive to work so the limit for projects is what I can fit in my truck. The internet. Chat with my children (none of which are actually children anymore). I like the quiet, but at the same time I am fairly social. When I am bored it’s because I haven’t figured out what to do next.

I don’t have any razor-related projects on the go and am really enjoying reading and watching what other SRP folks are doing. It keeps me from reaching for my hones and taking metal off my blades unnecessarily just to fill the time.

Keep posting progress reports please. You are helping to preserve my razors :D

Hard to get to get bored when things like this happen. When aggravated you can get pretty lively.

My Mother in Law is 100 years old, lives in a seniors home on the sixth floor and using her walker is difficult for her. The home has them all confined to their rooms. She needed a resupply of groceries yesterday which we did for her and ourselves.

When my wife went to the entrance where they had staff stationed and explained that we had groceries for her mom and answering the now normal 100 and 1 questions regarding your health. She was told her mm could come and get them. My wife said that is not going to happen as she can't see her pushing a cart of groceries while using a walker. Solution was not for a staff member to take the groceries up but for my with to do so. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

Yet another moment brought to you by the shallow end of the gene pool. In the meantime my Mother in Law received a notice that starting Monday caregivers will have to make arrangements to have staff deliver the groceries and other needs of the residents there due to the lock down. Nothing like planning ahead when you institute a lock down.
