No, never tried that. There are a million and one home remedies for it. When I was a kid they used to sell this soap called "Octagon soap" which was a brown bar. It would clean all the junk off and then of course the calamine lotion. Folks swear by cool baths and a compress with colloidal oatmeal.
I've seen reference to "Alum" but I think they mean what used to be called sour salt which is vitamin "C".
I have only lived over here for 19 years and I have never had poison ivy or poison oak. Don't even know what it looks like.
I'm busy clearing out and weeding the back yard at the moment so i hope i haven't got any.
I never heard of it in the UK so i don't think we had any there.
It can be found in most Canadian provinces so I'd keep an eye out for it and learn to identify it. Here is the info for Ontario.
Poison Ivy

Once you come in contact with it....you'll never forget it. And that goes for poison oak and sumac, too.
And don't burn it, either. Inhaled smoke is the worse.
I took shots for it. Did not have to touch it.
The last time I had it was from handling some hay that had been bailed with it.
...AND if you ingest it you will get the rash ALL the way through.
If you catch it before the rash starts gojo hand cleaner will remove it as it is an oil from the plant that causes contact dermatitis.
But that doesn't work after the reaction starts.
Maybe they might have been referring to alum salt used in pickling.
