QUESTION HANDLE/SCALE

QUESTION, How were razor handles become known as, or called scales? :shrug:

The term has appeared in a catalog as early as 1840, so it must have been in use prior to that. It was also used for the liners of pocket knives. I'm going to guess that it started out as a reference to the two liners matching or made to scale and over time just became scales.
