So how many do you have?

I just started straight shaving a few months ago but I can already tell that this is something that I'll be doing for a long, long time. But it's not just the act of straight shaving that I love, it's also the acquisition of new razors. I love the feeling of opening the mailbox and seeing that package that's just the right shape. Or scouring the shelves in an antique store, or the tables at a flea market and coming across that pristine, rectangular box that could be hiding "the big one". At the rate I'm going now I seem to be acquiring one razor per week and a half. Not bad, but if I continue at this rate I can only guess what our bathrom will look like six months from now (including brushes, soaps, etc) My girlfriend is convinced that I've lost my mind. Maybe I have. Maybe there is something wrong with me... but I don't care. I love what I'm doing. And my girlfriend is going to love it when I hang a new set of shelves in the bathroom to help contain the flood of incomimg goodness :) So, back to my question. How many do you have? How long have you been collecting? Are you largely responsible for putting Mama Bear's kids through college?

6 razors as of now .... only 1 of I am currently using. The others are going to be resto and honed.

Soaps can be never ending as there is always something new to try.

Mama-bears is great. I too have got a few of her soaps and love them.

What's really nice is as you go along in collecting you can update your own gallery here with pics of you new acquisitions ;)

There was an old thread somewhere on the same subject but I have about 15 shavers 10 projects and about 5 dead razors. 3 brushes, 6 strops, 20 soaps and creams, and about 12 hones.

I have 5 razors (1 new and 4 vintage), 3 strops (1 new and 2 that I made myself), 5 soaps/creams... Unfortunately this isn't going to grow anymore for the time being because my cash flow grows smaller and smaller everyday... Oh well... at least I'll be sporting the clean-shaven-beggar look! :o:D

I have 2 useable razors right now. My goal is to 3 or 4 razors that I find gives me the best shave. I will probably buy one or 2 new ones. But will also want to get one or so that have the blade I want from another source (someting like ebay) clean and prep the blade, then send it out to put on a pair of nice scales. A Livi or other cusom razor is a bit out of my reach righrt now (child getting married next year). Not beyond reason in the future, just not in the near mid-term future.

About 85 + razors, shave ready in the bathroom. About 12 at the work desk to be sharpened. Five more coming from Ebay sellers, and one coming, soon, from Robert Williams.

I can't stop! Do I need help? _ Perhaps a family intervention?

I, also, have five strops, and at least a dozen brushes; currently I use three.

and, .....you don't want to know how many soaps and creams I have. It's really sick (a couple of new ones on the way).

* Is there a twelve step program I can get in to?

Hey English whats the best then?
Me, I have about a dozen or so razors.
One day I'm going to thin out the ones that don't suit or exite me.
Then I'm going to buy another dozen and do it all again and again and again.......!!!!!!!!!
I have a couple that are excellent blades.

But, everyone should have
1 oblique point wedge ivory scaled razor
1 badger hair shaving brush
1 nice bowl (to mix up your expensive English shaving cream)
1 tub of expensive shaving cream
1 good strop
1 pasted "thing" or 12k chinese hone to refresh an edge
with these 6 items it is possible to turn shaving into a pleasure:cool:

I have 25-30. I'm thinking about cutting down to a dozen or so of my best razors. We'll see if that actually happens :rolleyes:

Well I'm on blade number 125.

My razor is mine and I keep it secret, just in case I drop it and need a new one.

As for shaving brushes, "SUPER" badger is the best. To own it is to know it. Period.

As for soap, we are blessed to live in the land of soap. Most English soaps are exceptional but I find that Floris soap is exceptional beyond belief.

As for a strop, I happen to have a Hand American. It does a great job. The question that needs asking is, is corn fead beef better than grass fead beef. Same question with horses. Actually, finding a British strop is like looking for gold. Incidentally, my American strop was much cheaper than any of Dovo's range and better than their best.. In Britain, our leather shoes are better but as for strops, I just can not find one. I know we still make horse saddles but as for strops ?????

Finally, you asked about finishing hones. Well for me, the jury is still out. What I want is a hone that gives a finish that is better than Chromium oxide. It is either a Japanese hone or a man made hone but I have not tried or used such a hone .... yet. Christmas is coming and I will try a couple of new hones soon. I am full of anticipation but 50,000 grit chromium oxide grit or paste on a flat bed leather hone is pretty hard to better.......... It's inexpensive and effective. Nearly as good as the old Liverpool Echo.;)

I completely agree with English on the Floris soap. People rave about CF creams, but I'll take my Floris JF soap any day of the week. :D

Hell, I only have 6 razors.......sad eh? Yep, five of em that need honing and what's that other thing you do? Stripping? Strapping? Stroking? Something like that....heh. Then the other one's shave ready, received from a forum member.

Now, the only reason I only have six straights is because I've never used one......not even once. Jeeeeez, I can only imagine if I ever DID end up shaving with a straight. Yeah, I'd have a few more than six I'd bet.

I got 12 razors, One new Dovo Blackstar, a Riegel and an Emu that will be tested tomorrow and the rest are projects, only one strop but 3 hones, a big envelope of cigar ash and a new fondness for newspaper.

Not to mention the wad of various grit wet and dry paper, the cherry and white oak kitchen worktop sample blocks for new scales, rubbing compound, etc, etc.

I've only been going 6 weeks, this could get serious.

When the last penny has been spent can you sustain yourself on a diet of strop leather and lavender soap???

Welcome to the world of RAD (Razor Aquisition Disorder). Alot of folks also have Hone AD, Strop AD, Brush AD and on and on. Remember that we at SRP do have a 12 step program to help you, but it doesn't work.

Well said Lynn....Problem is ,,, the program didn't work for me. Maybe I need the 13 step program:D

I've been at it since December- so far I have @5 in the drawer waiting to be cleaned, scaled, and finished. In the bathroom closet sitting in CD holders is 50+. Included are also a Tosuke and an Iwasaki. I have 6 great brushes and have given 3 C&E's away to familiy members I've turned onto soaps and Creams. I have another 20+ soaps and creams. My favorite soaps are from Honeybee Spa- if you haven't tried them you must. The best cream for me is Taylor Sandlewood although C&E sween almond is also awesome (although no longer available).

I do my 12 steps in the morning... from the bed to the computer to check on my bids :D

I think I reached razor 17 before I found my perfect razor. It's a Wade and butcher 7/8 with no hone wear(or it was reground) and nothing can even come close to beating it. that is how I justify buying more - you never know when you will find that perfect razor - judging by the fact that I got perfect once in thirty razors the statistics show that I will need to buy another 180 before I get a perfect 7 day set!
