First loss :(

One of my latest ebay scores was a Boker Red-Injun #101 round point. It had a small chip out of the blade, but other than that, was in fantastic condition. I couldn't wait to get to work on it. I spent around five hours hand sanding it, and working the chip out. I worked it to 400 grit, and was planning on putting it in the vibrating polisher for a few days. So of course I had to take the scales off... yup, they broke while I was removing the pin. I thought I had drilled down more than far enough to gently lift the scales up. Snap. What an aweful sound.

Has anyone had any luck gluing scales? Of course they broke right at the pin point, which is the highest stress point. I don't think even epoxy would hold them together, but I might give it a shot.

Anyway, if anyone has any boker scales they'd like to sell, let me know.

Sad to say I have done almost the same thing, more than once. I haven't done that for quite a while now. I feel your pain, though. The bad part is when it happens to a pair of scales that goes specifically with that razor, like a Dble Duck! Yes, I have done it to a Duck. It almost broke my heart! When I now remove pins and it is on scales and a blade that go together, I am very, very careful.

Ironically, I just got an Ebay special that had scales with the Boker tree on them. The blade was trashed and I got it really cheap. I actually bought it for a Boker blade already in my inventory that had generic scales.

Live and learn, and be more careful next time.

I don't know if the product is available on the civ market or for what cost. But we use a really high grade type of glue/epoxy at work (and by we i mean the airframe guys not me personally) I can see what i can do to get you some and you can try it out. I've used it for stuff myself. It holds helicopter parts together. The thing is once it has bonded you'll have to shape it up. Like using bondo or something. If interested let me know i will have to get with the AF shop guys to get it.

I do believe I have some Tree scales, I can't remember as I am still at work, but if I do yer welcome to them....

Oh, good Lord....if I'd done that to a Duck.. thankfully it was just an Injun! Really good idea, shopping for crap blades with good scales. Looks like I'm going to have to enter that market now. :)

I really appreciate that, but unfortunately, this is one of those applications where it isn't the glue itself that isn't strong enough, it's the stuff the glue sticks to that lacks the strength.

i know it sounds like you have somebody with some scales which is great but maybe as a test project you can try something. if it were me i would get some JB weld ( i know this is a brand name but it is an automotive 2 part epoxy used for everything from plastic to remoulding the intakes on engines heads), on the part that faces the blade i would grind out a bit of material, almost like counter sinking the hole (you can't see it anyways) and fill the hole with JB weld (the grinding just gives it more surface area to stick to) and then redrill the hole through the JB weld. the stuff is tuff. i was retrofitting my Suzuki GS500 with a CBR600F4i front top fairing and dropped the whole thing breaking off the tips near the windshield right on the mount holes for the windshield and mirrors and i used JB weld to basicly reconstuct the whole tips on both sides. that stuff is strong.

but i know you have some other scales for it. that is jsut what popped into mind.
