How many SRP gents/ladies "fold"?
Folding at Home, as many of you know, is a "Distributed Computing Project" hosted by Stanford University. Again, as many of you know, : ) proteins are the very building blocks of pretty much everything that is alive. As enzymes, they promote and control the chemical reactions that control all of life's processes. *Many* diseases can be cured/treated/prevented if scientists were able to unlock all the secrets to proteins, especially how they "fold" when they are created. If they miss-fold, you have the basic building block of a laundry list of problems.
Unfortunately, trying to simulate protein folding by hand would take trillions of man hours of labor. Fortunately, most all of us have computers sitting idle most of the day. Folding at Home (FAH from here out) can use those idle cpu's to help solve the mysteries of protein folding. The program sits in your system, and is completely transparent. You'll never even notice that it's there, or that it's even working. It only uses idle cpu time, and will not interfere with anything you do on your computer.
Many enthusiast groups around the internet have folding teams. I've been folding for about three years for ABXZone.com and various other teams. I would love to see a Straight Razor Place folding team. I'd switch over to our team immediately.
Even if a SRP folding team doesn't develop, I'd at least like to encourage those of you that are interested in such things to at least look at helping FAH or any of the other distributed computing projects out there. it takes a *maximum* of 30 minutes to read, download, install, activate the program, and after that, it requires zero input or time on your part.
Holy cow.. as I re-read my post, I realize that I'm diong exactly what I *hate*.... spam. The only difference being that I stand nothing to gain here, so I hope it's taken in that light, and not as "oh boy, more spam." If you guys think it's spam and not appropriate here, let me know.. I'll be more than happy to delete this post.
FWIW,
