I haven't had the pleasure of going yet, but I have heard that Hess has shaving supplies. Google Maps info:
Hess Hair Milk Laboratories Inc
1911 Rice St
St Paul, MN 55113
(651) 488-7261
Good Luck!
Zac
Here is an interesting post for anyone curious about the history of Hess. It is the 2nd one.
That place is almost walking distance for me, I bought my only new straight there (Dovo best quality). It's now mostly warehouse/distribution center with no browsing.
Marvy supply is pretty good, they have the Master line of aftershave and the full Pinaud line, plus Derby and Dorco DE blades, some Omega brushes as well.
I can't find any sources for higher quality soap or creams locally except for the rebranded Proraso at Bath and Body works. I've started checking out international grocery stores with no luck so far.
Randy and I have been the Hess at different times. I believe the youngest that posted in the link you had, Jimmy, is Roger.
They really don't have much for shaving supplies. Randy can give more details, but some years back IIRC Randy was fortunate enough and persistent/persuasive enough to buy a remaining lot of Hess straight razors which I believe he sold all but what he kept.
Hess still has some small (approx 2"x4") soft white very porous Arkansas hones (very coarse) at the location. No soaps or creams, no strops, etc.
Razors?.........Ok here's the scoop my SRP bretheren and sisteren: Roger told me last Fall that he actually was going to get an order of 5/8 round point hollow ground razors from Germany sometime in Feb 2009. I did not check back, but Randy did IIRC. I'll PM Randy and have him comment. Before you get your hopes up that there will be a new supply of cracked ice Hess stainless three pin beauties or the like, not a chance. Low end entry straight razors is my understanding.

I telephoned and got the answering machine. I have a Hess so I am okay on that front. I was mainly interested in finding out who made their razors back years ago. Did you or Randy ever get any info on that ?
I've sent a note to Randy asking him to add to this post. He must be out at the moment. I didn't get the feeling in talking to Roger (I'm 99.99% sure that was his name) in person that he was knowledgeable on those details.

Bob Marvy @ the Wm. Marvy Co. told me he also sells straight razors, but does not have them on display - you need to go in and ask for them.
Ah, Bruce; until us MN guys who are capable of making a stop at the actual store to inspect the razor wares and determine whether or not we have prime razors available at good prices, we should be tight lipped about it. Just deserts and finders first and all. I can hear the worldwide collective of keyboards smoking from friction as they attempt to find the Marvy phone number!:ziplip:;)
Chris L
How much were the Fromms at Marvy? I've never shaved with one, but after googling them I'm intrigued. A $39 3 pin Solingen blade HERE
I'm intrigued. :hmmm:
Chris L
Hey guys, I just came home.
I asked Roger Hess about the razors ChrisL referred to and he said "Dovo". End of that story. The father of Roger Hess would probably know the history of the manufacturers or be able to look it up.
I should do that before he is gone.
Hess sells Badger & Boar hair brushes and some others. One of our guys, Dresden, picked up an unusual one from them recently. Hess also sells a full line of Barber supplies as does Marvy. When I checked at Marvy a few years ago they were selling Fromm razors. Bruce knows more about them than I do.
Hey! If your close to Hess then your close to me. I am sending you a PM with my phone number. Gimme a call and stop over anytime.
Great thread guys. I'm moving to Minneapolis in a few weeks and was wondering what I had to work with. I'm leaving Chicago and some great shopping in favor of a quieter family life.
Dave
Man you city guys have all the stuff. I'm stuck out in the boonies making soap from sheep parts and leftover campfires, and have to sharpen old tractor parts to shave with...
Hey Mike,
What's the Rockwell hardness on old tractor parts? I've got an old John Deere that is not wanting to start and might consider turning it into about 87,000 razors if the Rc is up to snuff. :D
Before you part out those sheep you may want to squeeze their hair for some of that wool fat that Mitchell thinks is so swell. Just a suggestion... ;)
Well, I'm in MSP this week for work and to find a place to live. I just heard about a place called Heimie's Haberdashery. Does anyone know anything about them? It sounds like the sell the T&H line, but I'm interested in the shave quality. I've never had a professional shave and would love to experience it.
forgot the link.

Hello Dave,
Welcome to the Twin Cities! Give me a call if you have time.
I have not been to that establishment but maybe one of the other guys will post about it.
It was a crazy week, but we finally found a place! We'll be making the move June 13th, and we are very excited.
We really fell in love with the city.
Spring is a good time to move here. You will find a full schedule of cool stuff going on all summer and well into the fall.
It seems like a friendly place with lots going on. I was told the lake by our house has free concerts in the summer, so we are looking forward to that. We used to catch the free concerts in Golden Gate Park when we lived in San Francisco. It's just a great excuse for a picnic.
We are here, and all moved in. So far, this was a nice change from Chicago.
One questions to the locals. Any confirmed place to buy Maas?
Thanks,
Dave
Hopefully you'll have better luck finding Maas in Minnesota than I did in Iowa. The only place I could find it was online.
I just moved back to Madison, but I live in MPLS during the winter and spring each year. I did some extensive searching for wet-shaving supplies when I was there this past spring, so I thought I would add what I found. You may want to call ahead or check online to confirm some of the product availabilities to be sure:
Barbershops
- Heimie's Haberdashery (as was mentioned). I've heard you can get a good shave here, but have never experienced it myself (yet!). They sell T&H products, and Mustache Jim, one of the barbers, will sing as he shaves you if you want.
- Winston's Barbershop on Lake Street in Uptown East of Hennepin. They do straight shaves on weekends here (possibly only Sundays). They also carry brushes, creams, and aftershaves from E-Shave.
- Floyd's Barbershop in Uptown on Lake St. Their site says you can get a shave here, but better check to make sure it is a full straight razor shave.
Wet-shaving supplies
- Southdale Mall in Edina: Crabtree & Evelyn (brushes, creams, soaps, aftershaves), The Body Shop (creams, brush, aftershaves), Bath and Body Works (C.O. Bigelow cream, aftershaves), also stop in at Juut Salon for Aveda AS Balm (and a haircut from my girlfriend :)).
- Mall of America: Crabtree & Evelyn, L'Occitane (soap, aftershaves, cream, soap), The Body Shop, Bath and Body Works, Aveda, Sephora, Nordstrom's (Art of Shaving creams, balms, etc.)
- The Galleria in Edina: L'Occitane, Ampersand (Better offerings from Art of Shaving compared to the Mall of America: Creams, Balms, Soaps, Brushes, Straights, Strops, etc.). Kiehl's (creams, aftershaves) is also in Ampersand.
- Neiman Marcus in downtown: Kiehl's
- Cherie Boutique Francaise in Wayzata: Kiehl's, Art of Shaving, L'Occitane
- The Garden of Eden in St. Paul on Grand Ave. & Victoria: Colonel Conk (soaps, styptic, brushes), Pre de Provence (creams, balms, soap), Kiss My Face (cream), Casswell-Massey (balms), Royall (aftershaves/cologne), Lucky Tiger (aftershave), Alba (creams)
- TBS mart on Portland just off of 494 in Richfield carries the Indian creams made by Godrej. It is a good, cheap cream, but I'm not a fan of the scents.
....Yeah, I looked around while I was there. Just a bit :D
Hopefully someone else will jump in and tell you where to find some MAAS. I've never looked for it. I am really a fan of the Twin Cities.
Hi guys, I'm in Hudson.WI which is just 15 min from downtown St. Paul. Do you all have a shaving club? I think with the number of people here who are in the metro area should really think about doing this. I am very new to this style of shaving and have been a DE shaver for several years. Straight razor's have always fascinated me and have just received 5 vintage straights that I am going to restore. I am in the process right now of doing a restore on a "Liana" 6/8ths razor right now that has a ton of pitting. Going to also re-do a set of scales too. Scales I think will be curly maple stained dark ( honey oak) with a ebony wedge.
Let me know if anyone is interested in getting a Straight Club together because I would be interested.
turbine/Bill
The Minnesota Shaving Club is alive and well!:) I have to set up another get together soon.
If anyone wants some one on one honing lessons just let me know, I will be happy to work with you at my house or yours.
Just send me a PM.:)
Since us Iowegian shavers are rather sparse, I'd certainly like to come up to another MN get-together.
I guess there is a new shop in uptown on lake on the ground floor of a condo. It is just a few blocks east of Hennepin ave. i haven't tried it out, but it advertises a shave for $20.00. I have heard that there is another place on Hennepin as well. maybe they will be selling shaving supplies as well.
oooops! I think I found some at Walmart.
Polishes and cleaners section.
I'll check there next. It's one place I haven't looked. I need to stop giving all my money to Target anyway. Between diapers, wipes & formula they are bleeding me dry...
I went to the ACE by my house in Linden Hills and had no luck. It is a smaller store, so the selection may have been limited.
Hmmm....I found some in the White Bear ACE, right off of 61. It's a Frattalone's Ace, but I can't imagine that would affect selection.
Frattallone's Ace Hardware
I also looked on walmart's website, and no maas to be found, but maybe the online selection is different.
Hey can someone sign me up for the Minnesota club? I can't believe I just now found this!
