Suggestions For A Functional Display Case
Greeting Gentlemen,

As I get pulled farther into this obsession, I have developed a problem that needs to be addressed. The variables are:
1. Organize my growing collection of razors, brushes, colognes etc.
2. Have my rotational razors easily accessible.
3. Display unique razors in a manner suitable to their beauty/history.
4. I have a two, soon to be three, year old daughter who is fascinated with watching daddy shaving with his pretty razors.
Skills that I bring to the table are the fact that I own and run a professional wood shop business on the side. My latest commission was an interior sign. It is 70" wide and 43" tall. The sign field is a lamination of cherry on top of walnut with the letters routed at various depths for architecturally pleasing shadow lines once the accent lighting is added. The border floats allowing the sign field to expand and contract with the changing seasons.

What I would like to design and construct is a display cabinet that locks. And even though I prefer working with cherry, walnut, and exotic woods, my sweet wife has informed me that this piece will be painted to match the color scheme of the master bath.

Addressing moisture concerns, I will plan on having colored bottles or jars filled with desiccant, disguised as bath salts, that will be recharged accordingly in lieu of heavily venting the cabinet. All occupants will be properly oiled according to their needs and usage cycle.

Other factors include:
- Only brushes not in the current rotation will be within the case.
- Mirrored back.
- Ascetically pleasing stands/holders for straight razors and a select few DE.
With all that being said, if any of you own or have seen something similar, either in whole or parts, that I could use while in the design process I would be most appreciative. Any and all input and/or suggestions carry much value.

The only similar problem I have is nr 4... although it is a cat.

Stealing badger brush, playing with water, chasing the sound of the razor on the strop, and that of the scraping on the face. And last and most dangerous, jumping on back whilst shaving.

As I refuse to lock my companion out the best way to keep her clear is either get her a special toy to play with (dunno about kids that age but there must be something) and/or food (give her a cookie and put her in the childseat so she can watch and still be clear of danger?)

Just a Saturday morning thought.

Hoekie,
It's sounds like you get a great deal of free entertainment from that kitty of yours. Mine just sits back and critiques my form. With my daughter, I'm much more worried about her getting a hold of one of my razors when we aren't in the immediate vicinity. Currently they reside on top of a very tall book case just outside the bathroom. But after seeing her climbing abilities, I'd feel safer having them under lock and key.

It's a little red devil deserving her full name "Nydhogg" (see Norse Mythology).

On the kiddo:

I don't know if you can easily get them there (should be), but what about a standing glass cabinet like in a shop?, all glas but with a small lock to prevent theft/opening? Too heavy and big for her to get hold of or tumble over. No way she will open it.

Ultimate solution: Adoption? :-p

Sounds like a great project. We have kids running around too. Love to see the pics when you're done. Nice sign btw.

I have been toying with the idea of designing a shavestand in distressed (or old) wood with built in cabinets, mirrors, etc. Throw it in the bathroom off my home office until we remodel the master, when I can finally have my own niche on a different wall from my lovely wife and all of her friggin makeup and S#@$t. Yes! If I see a really nice antique one, all the better.

A good place to organize all the paraphanelia is always a problem. I've tried many things and I either outgrow them or they just don't work. I finally just spent the big bucks and got a gerstner cabinet. At least I can store all my razors and other assorted things under lock and key and it even looks good.

Thanks! Reclaimed wood either from old barns or river bottoms make beautiful projects. The growth rings are incredibly tight resulting in very stable material.

That's a really good idea. Since I built the cabinets I could restructure the drawer layout in one of them to match a tool style cabinet configuration. That would be nice in addition to the display cabinet. Something to think about.
