I am between two razors from razor designs. One is the dovo with the white bone handle and a good amount of gold plating on the blade. The other is the Dovo Special with the tortoise shell handle. Question is: will the white bone handle be weird porous to hold onto or is it a nice feel? I would prefer a smooth finish I think.
I just got a Boker Edelweisse from SRD which has bone scales and the feel of them is amazing I think! Shaved with it this morning actually, and now trying to sit here and not faceturbate..!
To touch, they feel like warm marble and they have more heft than wooden or celluloid scales.
The scales are porous and I have seen threads on here where oil has soaked into bone scales. but then it can soak into wooden scales as well!
Personally I like the look of bone scales and I love the feel of them as well, so I'd go for that razor. In terms of porous-ness, just make sure you dont get the scales too wet or get oil on them and you should be fine. Just the usual TLC you would give to any item you want to keep in good nick!

I concur with my friend Stuart. There is something appealing about white bone scales. On the other hand, be cautious with the oil.
I once had a beautiful Bismarck with white bone scales. For some reason, I must have been a bit too generous with the oil on the blade. By Jove, I ended up with a big stain mark on the scale.
Even so, if I were given the choice, I would go with the white bone scales. After all, you cannot deny the majesty of a razor with white bone scales.

I have to agree with Stuart and my good friend Obie. White bone scales seem like the pinnacle of scale evolution to me. I think I can safely say that the first new razor I purchase with be the Boker Edelweiss, in large part due to the scales.

There really is nothing quite like the look of polished bone..! My thread on my new Boker has some pictures, but they really dont do it justice! If you cant get your hands on the razor before you buy it, check out an antique store and see how nice bone looks, and how well it ages too!

Porous? I think so. I believe something is done to seal/stabilize them.
I have the both kinds.Bone is not smooth but not rough either, just gives you better grip, special has plastic handle- smooth, but as a shaver I rather prefer Bismarck.

That Bismarck spike point with the bone handle is a lovely razor. One thought occurs to me, however:
Since this is your first razor, a spike point might not be the best idea for a starter razor. The spike will have a bit of a bite. A round point might be wiser. Of course, I don't know where your level of expertise is with the straight razor.
Perhaps the SRP experts can chime in here. In that case I recommend going with their opinion rather than mine. Good luck and enjoy.

Well guys I am very very new to the art so I think I will avoid the spike point. I want to get whatever I get from the straight razor design store because I know it will come ready to shave. Do I have to get a 6/8 as a beginner? I kind of would prefer a smaller 5/8.
