Sanitize

Greetings all, I've been breaking out a bit more than usual and I wonder if it has anything to do with not sanitizing my razors in some way. What methods are available for this job (e.g. barbicide, boiling water, etc)? Thanks,

I've had the same problem. While attempting to sharpen a razor a while ago, I tested the edge by shaving patches of hair on my thighs. When these patches grew back, the area was irritated.

Then again, I was using an un-stropped razor on completely dry skin. Yeah, I pretty much answered my own question.

There are several options. I use Clippercide after I shave and I use Isopropyl Alcohol just before I shave after stropping (excellent suggestion from member Uthed). I wonder if there might be a reaction to the tanning fluid in the strop for some people; or some junk from stropping less than perfectly clean razors ends up on the strop. I think that the alcohol should be sufficient in a home environment, but I am a bit obsessive.

I've been using the wife's cotton make-up remover pads with 70% Isopropyl (Rubbing) Alcohol to wipe the blade before and after shaving. Each pad should last a couple shaves. I'm trying to find a way to reduce the wasted cotton pads, but I need to find the right cloth. The first idea is that it's sanitary so maybe it's more about the treatment of that cloth.

They make jars for it somewhere. There's an aerosol too.

I also have a Barbicidel jar, but it's difficult to dip the blade because of the post and tray. I am afraid of hitting the blade so I don't use it for that purpose anymore. But it sure looks cool on the counter.

You could always hold the blade over an open flame to sterilize it but I wouldn't recommend it. Actually its probably being caused by irritation from shaving. You might lay off the straight a couple of days or when you shave for the next few days just do a single pass.

I ran out of my classicshaving soap last week and the only thing I could get was some Williams (cause I live in the middle of nowhere). I wonder if the change in soap has anything to do with it. Like, maybe the lather isn't as good and this would explain irritation?

Both Barbicide and Marvicide have a medium sized jar, maybe 8" tall. Take off the lid, unscrew the black buton handle and the tray comes right off. Just dip the blade or the entire razor for a few seconds into the solution, rinse with water and you are germ free.

The jar is size so even if you drop the whole razor in the monkey tail is still right at the top.

Thanks Tony, this is the direction in which I'm leaning :)

I am an HIV instructor. Bleach is the way to go if you want to, but if you are not sharing shaving implements alcohol should be fine. Maybe a two or three day beak on the shaving would help. Good luck!
