I currently use a 5/8 dovo singer, if I were to get a newn a razor and wanted to get a thicker razor, what would you guys suggest: a 6/8 or 7/8? Would I be able to tell the difference between a 5/8 and 6/8, or should I go for 7/8? Also, what would you guys suggest for a good second razor, that would be similar enough to the singer, but something different. I am thinking about x-mas gift for myself... ;)
I guess it depends on the type of beard you have. If you have a heavy, wirey beard, then I would say a bigger blade will be better for you. I myself have a heavy beard. I started out with three 5/8 razors (Dovo "Special", TI "Evide Sonnant Extra", and a Hen & Rooster) and just received my SRP L/E 6/8 TI. In fact, I just shaved with it today. Is there a difference....Yes. The blade is a bit more heavy and it seemed to have no problem cutting down my somewhat heavy beard. Where I had trouble cutting with my 5/8s (the more course beard around my chin and mouth) I had no trouble today with the 6/8. I don't think I'll buy any more razors less than 6/8. Don't get me wrong, my 5/8s did, and still do, a fine job. The shave with the 6/8 just seemed a whole lot more effortless.

Thanks, I like my 5/8 but have nothing to compare it to. I think 7/8 may be a little too big so I may go for the 6/8 since a difference will be noticeable. I think an SRP razor would be cool, I just don't know if I can drop a lot of money on another razor. We'll see though, I may just have to.

I was surprised how much bigger the blade was on the 6/8 versus the 5/8. I liked the shave the 6/8 gave me today. I will continue using my 5/8s. I really like all my razors. It just gives me a little versatility. I know that when I have a couple days growth the 6/8 will come in handy.
But, everyone's face and beard is different. You have to try different things and find what's right for you. With respect to cost, you don't have to go top shelf. Less expensive razors can be had and will work very well. The important thing is that it's shave sharp. Like RT said, you can pick up a used razor from one of the honemeisters out here and it will be sharp like you've never seen and will give you just as good a shave as a new blade.

What do you guys know about this: Thiers-Issard Sheffield Silver Steel, Kingwood, 6/8. I am not sure what silver steel is. Is is stainless with silver added to it? How well does it hold an edge compared to S.S. and Carbon Steel? Is this razor hardened with their molten-lead hardening process?

I do know that the TI razors are great ones! I received one of the TI SRP razors this weekend, and used it today. An incredibe shave. The other more experienced gents will have to chime in on the steel, but I would say look at the SRP razor. About the same price, and a limited edition.

Silver steel is the British term for what most Americans call O1 or W1 Drill Rod. It is a high carbon alloy with silicon, chromium and magnesium. Very hard stuff.
Of course, I could be wrong.

TI uses the OLD silver steel that has been used in razors for over 100 years. I asked Ray at Classic shaving, and he told me that according to the people at TI there is silver in their silver steel blades. Could they be missleading us?
