A quality jeweler's loupe gives you a much better look at your blade, in my opinion. Baush and Lomb would be my recommendation.
I just got a Radio Shack microscope yesterday. It's pretty powerful considering it cost $10. I can't complain - I can clearly see the razor's edge.
Just my two cents........

I know this will sound silly, but you did install batteries and turn on the light?Quote:

Why do you ask? :thinking:

keep a supply of AAA's on hand too, that little light goes through 'em.

Sorry about the confusion, but that's the state I live in!

I got one similar to this on ebay. This seller has lots of models and they are not too expensive. Check it out.

just how important is a microscope? I sharpen my razors as follows;
First time or if I feel necessary, I use the 4k side of the norton, then the 8k side of the norton, then a 12k shapton. usual stropping and then shave ready.
For all other times I just use the 8k side of the norton and the 12k shapton. Of course proper stropping but this serves me well.
Does most use a microscope?
Probably most do not have it and its not necessary just one more toy. Certainly its helpful but with the usual tests you don't need it. I'm waiting for the first guy here to view his straights with a scanning electron microscope. Now that would be something!
