Noob Introduction

What a great site!

Hi all, I am new here and I just wanted to say hello to all from a new member. I have just started to dabble with straight razor shaving and I am totally hooked!
Facinating . . . is a good way to describe the facets of shaving this way. I started out by surfing the net on the subject then I went off the deep end and picked up an older razor from an antique shop. Well . . . I am sure you have all heard that line before! Anyways, after a lot of delicate honing, my my 6/8 blade will "pop a hair". It is now really a razor.
So far I am only shaving the sides of my face. Without any direct hands on help, I am taking this slowly! :D

Now, hmmmm what to do for an avatar . . .

I bought a nice badger brush and some soap from (gulp) Crabtree & Evelyn . . . and a hone and strop from a local hobby tool supplier. Although the 8000 ceramic hone seems to work well, I am maybe regretting not having bought a 4000/8000 wetstone. (I should have known better from my espresso habit/hobby and upgrage fever)-but that is another topic. ;)
The strop is a leather strip bonded (glued) to a wooden handle. This I am not so sure about either, perhaps I should have waited and ordered something online.
These purchaces were however made before I discovered this helpful group!

that sounds pretty cool....don't worry, even this group hasn't experimented with evey possible option...we just enjoy chatting about it.

Welcome to the group. Sound like you are doing quite well,
honing the razor as you did. I guess I am going to have to
find me an old razor and try my hand at it.

I can understand being hooked, I shaved for the first time
on January 28th. It seems I can't wait for my next shave.

Emil,

Nothing wrong with buying your brush and soap from C&E. That brush is an Edwin Jagger, a fine brush. I have two of them. I've only tried C&E's almond soap, but I have their Nomad, Sienna and Almond creams. Fantastic stuff.

Great to hear that you are making good progress on your own. That's what the Help Files and Links are for. Your enthusiasm is also great. It's reassuring youknow to seenoob after noob arrive with the same zeal that I did. Makes me feel sane. :D
