Boy Scouts and Razors

I did a demonstration for my sons Boy Scout troop on honing and stropping razors Tuesday night.
It was interesting how many boys and fathers came over afterwards to get a closer look and ask questions.
In fact the Troop leader borrowed a razor from me to try it out. I also let the older boys know that it would help with acne. Trying to get them to start young. :cool:


In fact they asked me to do a shave demonstration next week. I am a little spooked with that. I don't want any scout earning his first aid badge on me...:eek:

Dammm I hadn't thought of that. I'll have to cancel... ROTFLMAO

You won't die if you keep your car in a double-walled garage for one run ;) Just make sure you warn them not to make any sudden noises and not to bump you, while you're doing it.

You may also want to mention this: It's easier for them to learn now as they only have a light hair growth, so the blade won't be getting snagged, and then as they start growing more hair, they'll gradually adjust to it.

Good luck Rich. I get a lot of questions about my shaving habits when people find out that I use a straight. I enjoy answering questions - str8 shaving is so rare that it's intruiging to most people.

Don't let them see the red stuff flow. You'll have a lot of angry parents complainging to you. :nono: :rant:

hey boyscouts are supposed to be resourceful and good at first aid so they can learn to shave and practice their first aid training. What a deal!

Is it bad that that was the first thing I thought of as well? Why is it that when the world pictures you shaving Rich, you're naked?

Prepare your lesson plan well in advance so the nerves don't get the better of you and make sure you include a lot of safety messages.

Good thing to pass on. I am an old scouter, Eagle scout in 1975, Scoutmaster for 4 years and have many family members in the scouting program. The program has changed many times since my first experience, but always for the benifit of the younger scouts. You have taught them some history and options. Most will move on without considering the straight, but some will actually try and appriaciate it. You have taught history and environemental and truely the self propelled man. My hat is off to you.

Thank you. While I was never a scout. My son has been in the program from Tiger cub. I really appreciate all the wonderful people who donate their time for these boys. My hat is off to them.

That's great that you're passing on the knowledge. Call me paranoid, but I'd have every kid sign a release of liability form or something. Due to our litigious nature, the kid who slices his ear half off and ends up in the ER may just decide to sue. Of course the Boy Scouts have deeper pockets but they might also come after you.

Thanks for the advice. it's amazing you have to rhink twice about something because of the number of lawyers in the country. :(

I know. It's sad really. I'm sure the Boy Scouts have some sort of insurance policy since they do stuff like hiking and other outdoor activities that are possibly dangerous. I wonder if they still have the Marksmanship merit badge. I earned mine at 14. Maybe they could have a straight razor shaving merit badge. That would be cool.

I was a Boy Scout when I was young (long time ago), and when my sons were growing up, they were both involved in Scouting. I'm now a Woodbadge level Scouter, and was the Scout Master for my youngest son's Troop.

During the time that I spent working with Scouts (and I still do, if asked to demo or someting), we taught them a whole lot more dangerous stuff than shaving. We routinely taught the Shooting Merit Badge (mostly using black powder rifles), Archery, and many other badges that used sharp, pointy things and skills that took refinement.

If you go through a good safety discussion before starting your demo, you will have met the demand for liability statements. You can probably Google any special requirements that the Boy Scouts have regarding safety info before you do your demo. If that doesn't work, a call to the local Council office will most likely get you the info you need.
