I have just picked up a 7/8 F Wellman "Altona" Goldene Medaille No5
It's huge an looks like it has bone scales. A little work needed to clean up but I'm sure I cam manage and I'll post before and after pics soon.
Does anyone know of this make ?.

The only info I find in "Goins' Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings" is...
"FR. Wellmann Altona Cutlery, circa 1876"
Maybe you can search in on the web. It seems as though "Fr Wellmann Altona" is the company name. "Goldene Medaille No 5" being the style or model number of the particular razor?
A quick google search turns up a number of current links to German sites that mention Wellmann Cutlery. Perhaps the firm is still in business.

The blade is polishing up perfectly. Beautiful bit of steel.

Here are the pics.
I made these scales a week or so ago and didn't have a blade large enough.
This blade is perfect for them, the tang is so deep it will take some getting used to though.
For $6.00, a little in other consummables and labour I'm pleased as punch.

Looks like a monster of a razor. How does it shave?
I'll let you know tomorrow. I've just finished honing and stropping but am too tired now to concentrate and shave.

Must adnit i have never heard of it but it looks like a ripper ,I admit though I have a liking for large blades,which is a bit strange because my two best shavers at the moment are a 4/8 and a 5/8
