I have started it!

that is so wierd. i hear the same thing every time i tell people i don't want children. it's almost as if people can't bear the thought that anyone can choose, because if they could, they alone would be responsible for any resulting unhappiness...

i say this in good fun, of course, firestart. you know how i am. seriously, though, it's quite possible you're correct...about razors--not kids. :)

i did have three razors for a short time. i tried a frameback that wasn't for me, so that sat on my counter for a while alongside my everyday and the shave-ready i use once a month for comparison. but now i'm trading both of them (the shave-ready and the frameback) for one 1/4 hollow beauty. i don't know which one will wind up being my everyday and which one will by my spare, but i honestly can't imagine what i'd want with more.
you, on the other hand, are into restoring them, so i can understand a lot of purchases. i just like getting a good shave, and straights happen to be the best way to do it. there's no real reason to get more than i need to shave well.

I can give you a few good reasons lol...
1) Contingencies -- It's always good to have some spares in case one gets damaged or stolen.
2) Reduced amount of honing per razor when you hone them wholesale.
3) A blade performs better when it gets two days of rest between shaves, which makes it 3 + 1 for contingencies.
4) Now let's say you're travelling. You'd need to bring 3 razors on longer trips even though I'd settle for 2. Would they be your regular friends? The ones you don't wanna part with? No! That already makes it at least 6 for practical purposes.

My original goal was to have a 7 day rotation with 2 spares/travellers as the optimal figure, but I ended up with a couple more. So you see, there ARE good rational reasons to justify an onset of RAD :D

i figure if one gets stolen, i'll use my spare until i can replace it. it seems incredibly unlikely that one, much less both, of my razors will be stolen. has it ever happened to anyone on these forums? it seems premature at best to replace a razor before something happens to it.

and even with one everyday shaver, i still only hone once a month or so, so it doesn't bother me much.

but don't let me stop anyone from buying them. i just mean to say, for the newer folks, that RAD is a joke that's passed around a lot, but it's not something that happens to everyone; you can use straight shaving as a way to save money in the long run, as opposed to losing it.

I didn't say you MUST have a whole bunch of razors, just that there are perfectly rational explanations for getting a decent-sized rotation.

Rational? That sounds like something I used to be!:) I just told Joe two days ago that I really did not need any more razors. Well....I just won a lot of 9 on Ebay, biught 2 at an antique store and 10 NOS razors!

keep a few around that you really like, but can readily replace.

I know I travel more often than most, but Im sure others can identify with me. I have sold or traded most of my razors that I wasnt absolutely in love with. I have replaced these with unique and rare often over 100 year old razors that or not able to be replaced. So what about when I go to a hotel, visit family, travel on the road. I certainly dont want to take any of the razors that I cant replace with me, yet I dont want to take a razor I dont love.

I generally take a nice henckels friodur 8/8 that I love, but that I can also readily repalce (thanks to J. Crowley). I think you should keep at least two razors that you really enjoy using, but could replace if something horrible happened.

Also keep in mind that the less razors you have, the more honing on each razor and the more wear that razor will receive.

I have 4-6 favorites that will most probably never be found again if they were destroyed or lost. I keep them safe at home and generally use each no more than once every 4 -6 weeks. They rest I keep for daily shavers or while on the go.

Only I don't really have anything that's very hard to replace, except a 13/16 Heljestrand. I have W&B, Puma, Wostenholm, Dubl Duck, Boker, Filarmonica... But most of them can be replaced with something similar, at a reasonable cost...

This does not mean I do not love my razors :D
