I saw very early on in my straight shaving career this way to hold the razor from an old barber shop book. I haven't seen many people talk about this, so thought I would point it out. Once I switched to this grip, I noticed I had much better control of the full length of the razor, and my shaves improved. So, at least for the N-S pass, this is how I hold the razor.

I am pretty sure that instruction is for a barber, as in shaving someone else. I do not think it would work for shaving one's self?
I've used that hand position on occasion, but my preference is the thumb back on the tang opposite the middle and ring finger. For stability I put my pointer down on the spine when necessary. For the reverse strokes the grip is different of course.
If that works for you, that's great! The most important thing in a grip is stability and control: stability + control = safety. (Jimbo's first law of shaving...:))

It would seem you have to be concerned with additional pressure on the razor against your skin. But like Jimbo says, if it works for you then it's your ticket to success.
