Razor Making Demonstration

I gave a razor making demonstration last night. The nearby university invited me to give a talk to their art students and demonstrate making razors. I had a good time with it. The talk and demonstration went smoothly after I got over the deer in the head lights look.

I did the razor making demonstration like the same way cooking shows work, I had several razors already made at several steps of the process. That way they would not have to watch me grind for 30 minutes or watch the tempering oven for hours. I could grind for 5 minutes the pull out a prepared razor and say this is what it looks like after grinding..

Nice Charlie! I'm surprised just a little. My experience with colleges of art is that they don't usually go for sharp pointy or edged things. Congratulations on the gig.

Oh, and I'm sending you some pieces of titanium. I want videos of you grinding that from your chair. Including the after shot... bet you wear an apron from then on... ;)

That is so cool! Wish I could get my college to invite you, but it'd be a little bit of a drive.

That's awesome Charlie, I wish they would have done stuff like that when I was in school! Thank you for taking time out of your day to help spread some knowledge to the general public about the skill and knowledge that goes into creating one of these pieces of art! :chapeau

Forgetting my apron was a bone head move. Some the students very concerned I as going to catch on fire with the sparks, If I would have ground titanium there would have been panic.

Would've made a great shop safety thread, and a great lesson in being prepared for the class! YAAAARRRRGH!!! :dropjaw:

That is so awesome!! The one on the poster looks sick! :dropjaw: Its got a dragon type theme to it... Is the tang and shank supposed to look like a horn or something?

The tang/shank is not really supposed to look like anything. I wanted it to have an organic look to it, but I was not trying to emulate anything. Thank you for the compliments.

Yeah I wish I could've gone. But of course, I would've bugged you with questions for about an 3 hours afterwards:D

Long as you remember to put on your codpiece in the morning when you dress the apron is not such a necessity. :p

Very cool! The only guests that came to my design school were pretentious, self-absorbed blowhards who haven't sunk a nail or drawn a sketch since 82... Great to see your artistry recognized by an institution!

Would have been fun to attend - just as well you make videos for the rest of us to share in the magic.

Yes, I lent out two vintage razors and a strop. Maybe they will take to a straight razor.

They asked me to come back next semester. If I do the talk again I will make an announcement in advance. Everybody is welcome at their workshops.

Very cool , and they somewhat look interested! what amazes me is the size of the motor on the grinder?

I really want to get into making straight razors. Gah!
